About simple (auto) matchmaking system

Is there's a reference detailing out how does simple matchmaking work?

But well, beyond the idea that the system matches you with people available at the same time and wanting to play the same game with the same options, specifics are not so interesting (and can give some headache, I got some programming it!)

Which doesn't mean that we are not willing to explain some things if needed. Just not going to try to describe everything in detail Beyond what is said in the link provided above, could you elaborate on what you would like to know and why it matters, so that I can know how to answer in the best way?
