Time Limit in TTA: A New Story

Post by latexrhombus »

It is functionally impossible to kick someone from a game of TTA: A New Story for playing slowly as every time you push the "skip players out of time" button (when they are already out of time), they are given 20 seconds. That may not seem like a big deal, but as turns involve MANY clicks and turns can even be undone, it is possible to click undo or any random card any time before 20 seconds and result in extremely negative clocks without the ability to kick the person.

It is frustrating because the game is long enough to begin with so playing with a very slow player is painful. Is there another way to do this such as forcing a player out of time to complete their turn (as opposed to any click) before the 20 second boot timer expires?

Maybe it would be a good thing disable the Undo button for TTA after someone activated "skip player" and the 20sec countdown is in place.

In general I like the 20sec feature because it prevents you from kicking active players which i think is good. Kicking should be for players who stopped moving (due to not paying attention to the game or disconnect).

But yes, the undo-button gives the chance to extend the game forever this way without progressing in the game. Disable that (when skipped - not when just over time and nobody complained) and it should be fine.

Hi,

This clearly an abuse of the 20 seconds warning.

This is not specifically linked to Undo: in many games, you can cancel a very basic action (ex: selection of a piece) and it resets the 20 seconds warning :(

We definitely have to address this. Maybe we should not cancel the warning before the entire turn of the player has been done. That would fix the issue.

I'm a fan of the 20sec rule because it means you cannot kick active players which I think is good. There is abuse possible, that's true - but there are also very painful cases in which it's just not possible to finish your turn within those 20 sec. A good example is seasons which is often played on short timers but sometimes a move near the end of the game turns out to be very long because there's so much stuff to do. In that case getting over time doesn't even mean you played slow at all and it only happens in the end of the game while you've been within the timer for almost the whole game.

I think what would fix the issue is waiting for an action being done (+confirmed). Which in TTA would mean you cannot undo (so each single action is confirmed immediately and cannot be undone) and in other games would mean selecting + deselecting is not an action and therefore wouldn't reset the 20sec.

I agree with you. But we do not have the "action" concept you describe. Everything on BGA is an "action". For example with Chess, selecting a piece is an action, and unselecting a piece is an action. So we cannot determine for sure if the current action is something "not reversible that makes the game progress and consequently that must cancel the expel warning".

So I'm afraid that technically our only possibility here is to cancel the warning in end of turn.
