More useful training mode

Post by Technon »

Why isn't it possible to create a game in training mode without other real players? If I just want to try the game to see how it looks and works, how it is implemented in the website programming etc, it is sometimes impossible just because I have to wait for another player who also want to play that exact same game in training mode. If there is no other player who wants to play that exact game in training mode then it is impossible to do it.

So training mode is actually pointless unless you find someone who also wants to play training mode for the exact same game.

It would be much more useful if you could just start training mode on your own. It could be bots instead, or even no other players at all, since the point is not to play an actual game but just to try it out and get used to it.

For one game there is bot possible - Can't Stop. You open the table and have the option "play with computer".

And I know it's not exactly what you want, but you can try watching games in progress / review recently ended games.
For example if you are interested in Red7, you go to games and click Red7, and then there is a panel "see the game in action".
I am not sure though how to find recently ended games, except for finding any player that plays this game and checking his profile for last games.

You can try the play & pass mode, with a Premium account. I use it sometimes to discover a game without annoying to other people, while I learn how to play.

I would also like this option - I'm not new to boardgaming, but I am new to boardgamearena, and trying to learn how to play an online version of a game with the clock ticking away and knowing that I will lose reputation points if I take too long - it's very stressful!

I'm OK with the training mode, though I wish there was a more engaging tutorial mode that explicitly taught how to play the game and how to use the interface. Even after watching a how to play video and watching some turns taking place I find myself trying to figure the rules for some of the more complex games. I'm a bit cautious about trying games like Tzolkin or Through The Ages as I don't want to spoil the game for other people

It's possible if you're Premium (it's not very expensive). Then you can use "Hotseat" mode to try games by playing all the players on the same browser. More about this:

You can try to join the "Game tutors" group (https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=1111129), and use the group chat (blue "Discuss" button at the top right of the group page) to ask if someone wants to play a live (real-time) game of the game you want to try. Don't forget to mention "real-time", since people in Game tutors group often play turn-based to learn new games.
