Bad reputation for nothing

Post by Vlindertjee »

Hi everyone,

Yesterday I played “Les loups-garous de Thiercelieux” (The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow).
There were three players who kept talking in their own language and were very rude when the other players (including me) asked to talk English.
Then I told them; please don’t be so childish and just play the game.
They were very annoying and kept us from playing a fun game.

After the game, my reputation wasn’t 100% anymore, but got back to 60%.
My feeling is that these 3 guys had something to do with it and reported me.
I feel really bad about it, because I did nothing wrong.

What can I do to get my reputation back up?

Thanks for your help

Is it possible that you were the one being rude? English might be your preferred language, but it isn't everyone's.

This was caused by your public red thumb to green thumb ratio. The only way to remove this karma limit is to receive more green thumbs or the removal of the existing public red thumbs.

In a social deduction game though, it's possible for players to use a separate language to communicate in code which generally goes against the rules of the game. It would be a problem in a game like Not Alone too, and maybe any game where players can collude to give another player victory. I don't think it's rude in those instances to ask for only one language to spoken by the players, though it should be something that is handled in the options when setting up the game

In general I have also been in situations where people have used a language in a rude manner, such as when I was at Uni a few Greek people spoke Greek whenever a Turkish person was around to keep them out of any conversations they were having. I know that expecting people to use English can be a horrible entitled thing to do, but I'd give the OP the benefit of the doubt here.

PS - ValKyrie Eleison? Did you know there is a character in the Empowered graphic novel series by that name? Coming from a vaguely Catholic background, the name always amused me!

That makes sense. Is there a BGA policy on this?

It is not possible I was the one being rude. I talked to the other players, they felt the same as me.
I will try to get some thumbs up then.
Thanks for the help.

I am an English speaker and I completely agree with ValkyrieEleison. Isn't this what the translate functions are for?

Vlindertjee wasn't rude in the aforementioned game. The three aforementioned players were quite vulgar on the other hand.

There is no requirement to speak in English to play on BGA, nor any restrictions to the use of other languages.
Though, it is possible to restrict who can join a table based on account languages.

I am making a comment about actions and behavior in general, not about the events of this situation.

Just because everyone else is doing it too doesn't make it right. This same defense could be used by slave owners in the Confederate States of America and by most high-ranking officials in Nazi Germany. "Everyone around me felt the same, so it is not possible I was in the wrong."

You can't talk generally about this though, the specific game and situation matter, and jumping to Godwin's law is a bad look. There are games where clandestine communication is clearly a bad idea, and something to note is that English isn't the OP's first language, so they aren't asking someone to do more than they are. For games with in game discussion required, players should agree on using a common language, it could even be something stressed in setting up a table. That is what they meant by the people refusing to join in with the table being rude. Honestly, I feel like they should be able to appeal a karma penalty from the red thumbs, I'm somewhat curious if this other group play Werewolves often as a collective and use language in this fashion vs other players, but I suspect the mods have too little time to try and dig in to something like that
