Turn-based Recommendations

Post by Grungle_Mudge »

I've been playing carcassone with my friends using the turn-based setting; usually 2-3 turns a day. Which is ideal as our free time rarely matches up.

We're looking to try a new game. I've played colt express before and it is ace but I don't think it will work "turn-based" very well.

Does anyone have any recommendations for games the suit being "turn-based" with no time limit?

Thanks

Anything where you have to remember what other people did on each turn is out (unless you take lots of notes), so that kills Colt Express, Hearts, Jaipur, and almost any card game.

Games that work well are ones where the strategy is determined by the instantaneous game state. Chess, Backgammon, Can't Stop, gomoku, Hive, Quarto, Quoridor (mostly the abstract games).

Some games benefit from a little note taking of important events, but don't require a huge amount of keeping track of what happened each move. Puerto Rico and Stone Age fall into this category for me.

I think that the recent addition "Potion Explosion" is a very good turn-based game because there is much to consider on your turn and you need quite some time for the turn, but there is nothing to do on other players turns. It is still a "light" game and each player will only have 4-7 turns in total so that it is very quick.

Some heavier euros with no real hidden information are nice on here, as you have time to think. Terra mystica, through through the ages, etc. Just use the note feature if there is a bit of strategy you want to remember.

Tzolkin is another nice one with an undo feature too, which can be painful in real-time versions.

I'm trying different turn based games out at the minute.

Explosion is one that works rather well and is easy enough to start off.

K2 is also quite fun and takes a while to get up the mountain and the picking to the playing is a bit of a draw back but for the game play it's worth it as theres a lot your move affects

Rallyman and potion Explosion are 2 very easy onces to pick up.

Purto rico is good but can take a while to understand the game mechanism

Thanks for this thread. I was looking for this.

Games that require a lot of thinking, where the other players have nothing to do are the best for turn-based (that is, the games that you might not like playing in real life because there's so much downtime between turns).

Lewis and Clark is one I've not seen mentioned yet. It's a very fun game, but it takes some thought and planning on your turn, ideal for turn-based.

Someone mentioned Stone Age, it kind of works, but then you get the cards that require everyone to choose one from resources available from a dice roll, and that gets in the way--log on to see that you choose one tool, then someone else needs to log on to take a clay, until finally it gets back to who's ever turn it is to finish their turn.

My favourite turn base games at the moment are Rallyman, Postion Explosion and Eruption.
