Cribbage is now in ***alpha*** BETA

Post by MikeIsHere »

Cribbage is now in alpha, currently only supports 2-player (that may change if I figure it out)

https://boardgamearena.com/reviewer?game=cribbage

I am aware of one display bug
from Desktop browser > 1024 resized down to to 764px messes up the display, but mobile emulation of 764 is fine

Thank you

Mike this is great news! I wish I had the 500 games played necessary to help test it, but I guess that gives me incentive to hit the tables more often... Would 20 years of QA experience in the video/computer game industry waive that requirement perchance? Because I've got 'em! :D

Either way, best of luck!

Yeah, I don't know exactly the difference between a group member and a reviewer. I see you are part of the cribbage group so you should be able to play the game and open bugs or leave a message in the group

This is explained here: viewtopic.php?f=240&t=15392
(all playtesters can report bugs and suggestions, but only BGA reviewers can give their approval to move to beta)

Glad to see that my request for Cribbage on BGA is going to happen. I am dying to be on the volunteer squad. I have been a member for almost 3 months now. I have all of the requirements needed except for the 3 months senior one. I will hit that on July 3rd. Any chance you could sneak me into the group? If not, I can wait the two weeks. Can't wait to try it out. My favorite card game.

Just talked with Mike and we both think a 29 board could be a great addition (It's max pts in cribbage).

Also, 3 players and team play could be implemented.

Will there be an option for players to score their points instead of automatically adding them up? (Muggins or Cut throat rules.)

so I am open to ideas, but right now that is far far off, first I am working on showing the points more graphically

https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=19832

Then I also have to start another branch for 3-player because the layout is so drastically different it is almost like starting over
Right now I am starting to look at team Cribbage (this is a new concept for me and I have been playing for ~25years)
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=19826

Then we get to muggins the problem with muggins is the interface, to be left click only (since typing is against BGA UI rules)
There is a detailed discussion about it here
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=19689

Thank you for the suggestion and the testing.

I have been tossing around the idea of muggings,
There are a couple of issues I can't get around
First it would slow down the game as each player would have to wait for the count, and an extra "turn" in turn based games, but if both players agree to this style it is no big issue.

Another is the UI
BGA GuideLines state

II-2 Use left clic only● The whole game should be playable with only simple left button mouse clicks.● Context menus should not be used.●Dragndrop should be avoided (if you want to use it anyway, you should make a click basedalternative available).● Mouse icon must change on cliquable elements (« cursor:pointer » CSS property)..

So I would have to display a grid of 29 buttons (0-29) or of 3 buttons +/-/OK and the user would have to click up to 29 times (if they are lucky)

The final hurdle is the muggins themselves,
I would have to display this interface to both players all the time, if I only give the opponent an opportunity to correct the count when a miscount is done then that would tip the player off that something was miscounted.
Then how would each situation be handled

Player A | Player B
---------------------------
correct | correct -- this is easy
correct | higher -- should there be a penalty*
correct | lower --*
lower | lower than Player A -- **
lower | higher than Player A
higher | lower than Player A
higher | higher than Player A

*from section 10.4a of the American Cribbage College rule book
If the judges determine that the play
was not a muggins, the opponent will be awarded
the points taken as a penalty.

** 10.4a
If the true amount
of underpegging is determined to be other than
the amount originally claimed, the caller is entitled only to the lesser of the claimed or true
amounts. In no case shall the amount of points
awarded for muggins exceed the actual number
of holes that could have been pegged had the
scoring been correctly done.

I am open to any suggestions, especially variants that will give BGA players more ways to play, I just don't know how to overcome these hurdles. Please feel free to offer more feedback
