Going negative on time, but winning anyway

Post by slaaty »

I think the answer is that I just have really nice opponents, but a number of times I have won games in which I've been in the red for the last several moves. The same has probably happened to my opponents, but I usually don't pay attention to their clock. I've played several hundred games here, and I think the only time I've ever been kicked out was when I got a phone call and went way over, which seemed totally reasonable, and I've never kicked an opponent out.

It seems like the ELO adjustment is not impacted by being in the red if no kick out occurs.

Based on my experience so far, I'm disinclined to use the kick out function unless it seems like the opponent is really gone in a real time game.

I tend to take the view that we're not playing speed chess where every second matters. A karma loss is sufficient to keep people making moves in a reasonable amount of time. No need to quick players out unless they are away from the table for a long time.

That said, it's a bit annoying to play someone who doesn't make much effort to catch up the lost time and just relies on everybody's good will not to get ejected.

I've been going red on turn-based games that have 2 days of thinking time and getting the loss.

My expectation that was making 2-3 turns a day would be sufficient in turn-based game. Sadly, it's not unless I'm playing exclusively against friends. Therefore, BGA isn't the right site for me, which is too bad because the interface is probably the nicest of all the boardgame sites.

@ratpfink: You totally CAN play with longer delays between turns! I checked your profile and all the games you got a penalty were tournament games. Tournaments are a bit special because you usually have a FIXED amount of total response time up front. So if the tournament says "36h00 allocated to each player", then this time of 36 hours is a countdown that does not refill and it gets activated each time it is your turn.

If you choose a simple game, then you get real additional response time at each occasion when it is your turn. Choosing the setting "1 turn per 1 day" or "1 turn per 2 days" gives you indeed an additional full day or even 2 full days when it is your turn to respond.

@dschingis27: Good to know. I like the tournaments, but work got crazy so I can't sit and monitor bga for my turns any more... I'll stick with the simple games for the time being.
