Yspahan: Non respect of original graphics

Post by Alexcendre »

First of all, thanks to the developer for adapting this game. I really like Yspahan, and I'm very happy to see it on GBA. :)

I'm a little concerned with the graphics of the game... This does not follow the guidelines of BGA :
  • Fidelity to the original game is an absolute requirement.
  • Use player panels for the resources.
Fidelity does not mean modifying the graphics without respecting the original game.

Personal board original :

Personal board on BGA :
A very ugly personal board has been created.
Essential information, present on the original board has been deleted : cost, victory point and explanation of the effect.
An extra board (that doesn't exist in the original game) has been created to show the cost. Why ? This information are in the personnal board ?

Caravan board

The camels follow a winding path where the goal is to climb the highest.

BGA adpatation.
The caravan board has been divided into 3 parts. No more climbing.
The graphics have been photoshopped for an ugly result.

I disagree. The adaptions of the original graphics are entirely appropriate to fit the screen
format and the constraints of a digital implementation.

Routinely taking pictures of the original game pieces is one of the bad things that go on here. This often results in it being very difficult to see shrunken down. This game needs words for the actions, not dark small images.

It might be hard to read, but a small picture is easier to read than nothing at all.
We are talking about Ysphan not Through the Ages. ;) There are only 6 icons (+ camel, + 2 coins) which is easily understood with a drawing.
The best is to have the 2 possibilities: icon + text.
I encourage you to go in this direction. Tooltips are a nightmare when we play on a smartphone.

Please consider the following proposals, it would greatly improve your adaptation :

Separate each personal board with a whiteblock with the plaver's name. The classic concept on BGA.
I know my nickname in each game but not my color. Not sure your color-only approach is helping the color blind.

Add the resources in the player panels. Also, a classic concept on BGA.
On a smartphone, this game requires too much scrolling.

Thank you for the time you spend developing.

And to finish, watch below. The Caravan board is reversed on smartphone.

I think the changes are pretty sensible adaptations, but I would like to see the building icons somewhere. I keep forgetting what each of the buildings doo!
