Turn Pacing

Post by Hubbard »

Hi all,

So my experiences as a new-ish player setting up games with strangers are either:

- a turn-based Sushi Go! game where the first turn alone took an age, and I felt the need to leave the table,
- real-time RftG games that were break-neck fast and I got annihilated every time.

Being such an epic, I was wondering about the pacing of TM, both in turn-based and real-time modes. What should I expect about the pacing of the turns and overall length? Is it unheard of that a turn-based game takes place over multiple days/sessions, or can you be waiting for a colossal amount of time?

I've probably missed something obvious, but any advice would be great, cheers :)

I'm not too confident about the turn based timing of Terra Mystica on this site as I don't play turn based TM here. I'd wager it has a lot to do with your opponents. My general experience is that even the "fast" time settings on BGA tend to allow for somewhat slow play in my opinion.

As for real time, it again depends a bit on the players. Some will take quite rapid turns that may feel too fast to others, but even on the fast time settings I believe most players should have plenty of time to take their turns. You have a bank of nearly 3 minutes and 36 seconds per turn. Under these settings 4 player games tend to play in around 80ish minutes, and with some players more apt to use up their turn timer, might go to about 2 hours. At normal time settings you have nearly a minute per turn and up to 4 minutes of bank, so the game in my opinion can play out kind of slowly, potentially going for over 2.5 hours or more. At slow timer settings you get a 1.5 minutes per turn and over 5 minutes of bank, so games can go for a very long time.

Broadly though most of the players on BGA play in around that 20minutes per player time frame for real time Terra Mystica. Come give it a try, it's a great community.

I don't play turn-based.

As to real-time, as to what is "too fast", you should just try it out, I believe. I feel that "fast" is usu. more than slow enough, but I am experienced. I would very rarely feel any time pressure on "Normal". (If I miss a time limit, it is usu. because of a technical issue.)

I find that I sometimes join a "normal" game and it often feels like it moves at the same pace as a "fast" game. On most turns I think people just have a certain time they need/want. I generally play 3P or 4P. Games are often over one hour, and usu. less than one-and-a-half. (I would not quickly join a "slow" game.)

I hope this helps.

Turnbased can take a long time. I've played quite a few arena turnbased games, and the slowest one took over a month to finish. The slowest games tend to be the ones with players from America, Europe and Asia in one, so if you set up a non-arena game, make sure you have players from your own region.
Usually an arena game will take about 2 weeks to complete.
