In Hanabi why not make abandon rates easily visible? Or even allow filtering by abandon rates?
Currently we see (1) Elo (2) karma and (3) prizes. As a signal of ability, prizes are pretty meaningless; and karma is a signal of "manners". Elo is an imperfect signal of ability, since if bad decks or mistakes are not played out, it only reflects the good games. So abandon rates are another useful signal of ability.
Displaying (1) Elo (2) karma and (3) the ratio of games finished to games started will provide more meaningful signals than printing Elo, karma and prizes.
I think this is a good idea even if you think Elo isn't broken or abandoning games is an okay thing to do. All this does is make it more easily visible. The change won't affect your Elo.
I know some people would like Elo to be fixed, such as by adjusting for 2p vs 4p; or penalising abandoning, etc. These might be good ideas or not, but depend on the details of the propsed change, and so are not simple to implement. Or at least, not as simple as just making the abandon rate easily visible.
I don't know what backend is involved, but if the change is simple to implement computationally, then (A) printing abandon rates next to Elo and karma and possibly (B) allowing restricting table access by abandon rates seem good ideas to me.
