Display abandon rates in Hanabi

Post by ozymandias_ »

In Hanabi why not make abandon rates easily visible? Or even allow filtering by abandon rates?

Currently we see (1) Elo (2) karma and (3) prizes. As a signal of ability, prizes are pretty meaningless; and karma is a signal of "manners". Elo is an imperfect signal of ability, since if bad decks or mistakes are not played out, it only reflects the good games. So abandon rates are another useful signal of ability.

Displaying (1) Elo (2) karma and (3) the ratio of games finished to games started will provide more meaningful signals than printing Elo, karma and prizes.

I think this is a good idea even if you think Elo isn't broken or abandoning games is an okay thing to do. All this does is make it more easily visible. The change won't affect your Elo.

I know some people would like Elo to be fixed, such as by adjusting for 2p vs 4p; or penalising abandoning, etc. These might be good ideas or not, but depend on the details of the propsed change, and so are not simple to implement. Or at least, not as simple as just making the abandon rate easily visible.

I don't know what backend is involved, but if the change is simple to implement computationally, then (A) printing abandon rates next to Elo and karma and possibly (B) allowing restricting table access by abandon rates seem good ideas to me.

Yes, yes and yes from me. The amount of times I see people getting in a right huff just because I don't abandon Hanabi is frustrating. They often bang on about why am I keeping them in a game that will end up with 28 or whatever, they don't want to lose just a few ELO points or they are bored (by a challenging deal?). That works two ways, do I not also have the right to finish a game I start and iirc any game start page on BGA used to say something to the effect of it accepting was a promise to finish the game to its end, but I don't know the exact wording of this.

There needs to be some form of change to educate people that a loss in Hanabi is 3 bombs. Everything else is a win, it's just the score or in this case the little congratulatory phrase at the end changes. Because there is a little negative ELO attached to some games they get in the mindset that it's a loss. They see the ELO as the prize rather than the challenge of a difficult deal being more rewarding than +5 ELO or whatever. When you compare some people's game stats with games started versus games finished you can see abandonment rates of 30 to 40% surely this is not the intended ethos of this site?

More like 1000+. Maintaining 900 elo is doable. Even when I do not agree to abandon the game and let an occasional elo cheater bomb the game when they start acting like babies.

Even 1000+ is possible without abandon :P But agreed, in general I consider the level of 800-900 ELO players higher than those above 900.

I occasionally make it over 1000 too but it only happens if I play with 700s who know what they are doing. Playing with other 900s means you will stay around 900 (because of occasional bad decks)

Some of you may have noticed that the tickbox showing finished games only is currently not functioning correctly for some of us, me included.

As this is a function some of use a lot in Hanabi to judge whether a player quits far too much to be as good as the ELO suggests, it is a bit frustrating (although there is a workaround - see bug). I would appreciate those who are against abandoning giving a little upvote to this bug https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=28913

Thanks!
