Punish the Victim?

Post by Einarsdotter »

Playing every day, but today trying to start my second game got message about trouble connecting to server. No trouble navigating the site, just not getting into game when clicking start. Refreshed countless times to no avail. Rebooted system and was kicked from game; however, the system still kept telling me I was in game. Joined opponent's next game as spectator without trouble, so tried to start a game and failed in the same way.
Restarted my internet router and wifi router, played one game successfully, but the next game failed again... Karma 100 down to 51...
Nothing on my end has changed and I'm able to navigate the system otherwise and use other sites with no trouble. Perhaps this is a server problem in the Japanese region. There is no support and no way to troubleshoot. Was seriously considering Premium, but now I'm guessing it's pointless to monkey around here.

From the front page, click on the Service Status box to bring up https://boardgamearena.com/serverstatus ... ves_played
This will help determine if the issue is on your end or on BGA's.

Then, too, there are sites like https://DownForEveryoneOrJustMe.com/ that will see if a site is down or if it's your connection.

Thanks for the information, I will check it out.
I was connected to BGA and able to navigate the whole time, so I think I was connected and the site was running.
But BGA's own server log showed a drop to zero for about 3 hours on server 8 (where I was being told to retry by the system).

You probably ran into the same issue as this post: viewtopic.php?f=215&t=18159

Issue was tracked down to a stale session in the browser. Solution is logging out then in to refresh the session, as described here: viewtopic.php?f=215&t=18159&start=10#p72002

I have cancelled your penalties.

Thank you for restoring my karma.
When this occurred, I tried refreshing, restarting browser, rebooting computer, rebooting internet router, wifi router, and computer.
Effect of rebooting the computer was to lose the game. The game had been 'in play' for almost half an hour and attempts to contact the other user were unsuccessful, even from a third party. The game never advanced past the initial card selection. Clearly, a user would not willingly wait half an hour after people sent them messages about the problem; and, server 8 shows a sudden drop to zero for three hours. Something else was probably the root cause.
Yesterday, I connected and played enough games to raise my Karma back to 78 without the problem occurring again. This also suggests it was something which occurred at that time.
I will keep my eyes peeled as I join my group for play today.

Desactivation of gs8 was a precaution while investigating. Server itself was operational, as I said investigation showed that the issue was with cookies client side.
I cannot guarantee that your issue was the same, but as everything you tried didn't include loging out then logging back in, I think it's probably the same.
So if you get in trouble again, my advice is to add logout/login to the top of your troubleshooting list :)
