I'm sick and tired of players who run out of time

Post by tabicat »

I have been unable to finish a game of Rallyman GT over the past couple weeks because there's always at least one European (I'm in the U.S.) who runs out of time. I tried creating a "fast turn-based" game, but that doesn't help.

BGA really really needs an option to restrict games by time zones. I only want to play with people who are awake during the same hours that I am.

The restriction is there. Instead of by time zones, it is by whatever time you want. Because the night security guard who can play from midnight to 8:00 am local time doesn't want to set their computer to say they are in a different time zone, but does want to play.

Additionally, there are karma penalties for running out of time, and you can restrict tables by karma.

So, basically, what you have complained about has already been addressed.

The karma penalties are much too low. They do not act as a deterrent. I've already restricted to 85%+ and the problem still plagues me.

So no, I don't think it's been addressed. Like I said, I haven't been able to complete a game in weeks, always because of some European who doesn't understand the time restrictions and doesn't log in during the 12 hour period.

I agree with the restriction by time zone, but not only in turn based games. And I had same problems as you, regarding the turn based games (and real time ones), only that the ones who always go out of time, are... not European, but American :)

Hello tabicat

I totally agree with you that the karma penalties are too low and therefore, do not act as a deterrent, if they were more severe then maybe players would think twice before joining tournaments.

I have a similar issue, but with the Skip Button.

Why do you believe that the problem is with newbies? On the contrary, all of the problematic players are experienced, often with hundreds of games.

I think this is just personal experience. It's just natural that newbies are more likely to be a problem when it comes to things like this. A newbie is, well, new, and doesn't yet know what the site is about or how anything should work, and includes all of the new people who come here, who are going to be a pretty diverse group of people, including those "just checking things out." So there's greater possibility for a problem. Someone who has been here for a long time and has played a lot of games is far less likely to be a problem.

I feel you've just had some bad experiences. I'm in games with people who run over time, but it's certainly the minority.

(Just as a note, I'm glad Jest made the reference to the night watchman. Time zones don't solve everything. I work late hours and am a night person, and I frequently see the Europeans getting up and exchange a few turns. Being on an odd schedule, I don't want to be restricted by time zones.)

The penalties need to be increased. I just played with someone who was constantly out of time. Eventually I skipped + quit them to give them a penalty, but it's barely affected them.

They have 29 005 games played, are currently in 211 games, and have 43 quit and 245 timeout penalties on 1366 recent games. They're timing out on 18% of their games, and presumably making 100% of the games take forever.

Yet they currently have a 80% reputation!

Anyone with 245 timeout penalties in the last 60 games should be on 0 reputation, regardless of the number of games they've played. (So if they've played 245 or 245,000 it should be 0)

Personal experience, the difference between carefully choosing tables and joining Arena tables seems apparent, Arena tables are much more likely to time-out.

I tried playing Madeira Arena this season, it's 4-player and a real struggle to get games.

The 2 games that did start both timed out due to the same person (the reigning champion no less).

This means that the other people are all now sitting at the top of the Arena league without actually ever completing a game (and I'm one of them).
A bit of a mockery IMO.

I think if you time-out in an Arena game then you should be banned for the rest of the season to compete. Perhaps even in all games - take the competition seriously.
