I've seen this as a pattern on the site, player X redthumbed me for something stupid, etc... and more often than not, it is not the "personal redthumb". But it is the public one that negatively affects your reputation.
If you look at other sites that are moderated by the community, like Reddit and friends, you'll find out that Reddit is one of the most toxic and childish sites on the internet, it is full of circlejerking. If your opinion is unpopular you get down-voted into absurdity.
I think that the idea of giving the users the power to punish other users by redthumbing them, even if you had to give like 5 greenthumbs to random-people for each redthumb. Is inherently flawed, especially on such a popular site. People can just redthumb whoever disagrees with them, if they don't like their play. If someone got a power outage they are susceptible to being redthumbed by the other players in the table. And you don't even know who redthumbed you. And there's no way to appeal that. It is just flawed...
And what are the perks of that? Are there any perks? Most of the respectful people that I play with, don't even care to redthumb toxic behaviors or the like. I'd just ignore the person, or just give them a Private Redthumb if I don't want to play with them. The "Public" redthumb option, is more often than not, used inappropriately in my opinion, and should disappear. The private Redthumb should stay.
Edit:Another example of public redthumbs being misused: A user was threatened to QUIT or else they'd get redthumbed.
