Option to desactivate live scores

Post by WinchXIII »

Is it possible to add an option to have the choice between : live scores during the play or the choice to desactivate it?
Sometimes it's better for the strategy not to have the live scores but only at the end.

Each game have his own implementation, so it makes no sense to talk about "desactivating it" in general.
And then for each game you might get a different answer :
- some games rely on hidden information, so you should never have access to the scores
- some games rely on informations that were visible at some points, but no longer afterwise, so running scores shouldn't be displayed
- some games rely only informations available for all, so in that case what is the point of not computing it by the computer ? Unless that's the primary skill for the game (being able to compute scores), for most games it's just a tedious task that is not related to strategy.

One thing that comes to my mind is a player engagement. There are games where score while available is not thrown in your face while you play so you can decide to ignore it and do not get demotivated that you get left par behind (eg. Small world with their points used as coins). To list games that are available here it is definitely case for 7 wonders and welcome to (why there is score available here anyway during game?). Having an option to hide the score (either for all players on the table or a specific player i.e. I can decide that I don’t won’t to count points during game) may keep player engaged in the game till the end instead of being forced to finish the game while they know the game is lost for them.

For technical side I don’t think it should be game related as it is more about display not counting scores itself.

I have to agree with Tisaac here.

Most games are quite specific in their rules about the display of scores. It is either stated as public information (as soon as you score, move along the score track), calculated from public information (score is based on game state only), was public but then made private (score chips that can be kept face-down), or completely private (scoring only done at end-of-game).

The display of scores is game-specific. Changing the way it is displayed would be a change to the rules, something BGA cannot do (due to licensing agreements) without publisher approval.

Even on games where point chips are used, but kept hidden (Race for the Galaxy, Puerto Rico), the score shouldn't be displayed. If a player wants to know the score they should keep track of it themselves like in a live game, not have the computer do it for them. This is part of the skill of the game. Just like shells/feet/fruit in Hawaii, cards in hand in Jaipur and Kahuna, and virtually any other game that has a player screen, accumulated scores are a hidden resource.
