Flamboyants

Post by Karl Klammer »

In the how-to-play it says this:
Five Flamboyants
After playing the last card of a colour, randomly select one of the following bonuses for immediate use:

Gain a clue token.
Gain a clue token and recover a life.
Give a clue regarding a colour.
Give a clue regarding a number.
Shuffle a discarded card into the deck.
Play a discarded card, if possible.
Why does it say FIVE flamboyants if the text then lists SIX?

What happens if you only play with the 5 standard suits - which flamboyant won't be in the game?

We are usually playing with rainbow AND black powder? Which means 7 suits. So for a long time we thought that the last card you play in a perfect game does not trigger a flamboyant - because you will have used up the six available ones. However, we have now noticed that the last play of a five also triggers a flamboyant, namely the "gain a clue token". Which is a bit pointless because at this point the game is already over - and it also means that flamboyant exists twice.

Would be great if the how-to-play could be elaborated to actually give you the information about the above questions / observations.

[Personally, I would love a variant where each flamboyant power is permanently assigned to a specific 5 (or black powder 1). So you then need to decide to may not play the green 5 yet as it will trigger playing a discarded card; or rather play the red 5 than then blue 5 because this way you will get an instant color clue. Etc.]

Arguably, the basic Flamboyant "Gain a clue token" is a fake Flamboyant and is not counted in the "5 Flamboyant" of the title of this variant, as it is the default effect of finishing a suit. They probably added it to the list when noticing that if you play with black powder and multicolour card the 5 Flamboyants were not enough.

Note on your variant: I'd personally give the true 5 Flamboyants (excluding "Gain a clue token") to the 5 regular suits, and give the default effect ("Gain a clue token") to black powder and multicolour.

Ah, that sounds like a plausible reason!

I also like your suggestion - but would love if rainbow and black poweder had their own distinct flamboyant power.
Maybe: "Let another player take a turn out of order" or smt equally confusing.

I think "Five Flamboyants" means "various rewards when play FIVE", not "FIVE types of rewards", although it can't be applied for black powder.
