Tournament timekeeping variant...

Post by beanRoaster »

My apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere...

I just recently enrolled in a turn-based, fixed-time tournament. I had 36 hours of play time on my clock, but was paired with others who are in different countries and far-different time zones. I made my last move at midnight, and woke the next morning to find one of my opponents had moved at 1am (my time) and as a result I lost 7 hours on my clock that I could do nothing about.

What if.... there was another time-tracking option where every player could define an 8-hour block of time (i.e. their sleep time) when their clock did not count down? I understand this could prolong the game when 3 or more players are spread across multiple time zones, but it would prevent us from needing to be available to take our turn 24/7 and being penalized for getting a good night's sleep. I'm not suggesting eliminating the current strategy, but offering this variation as an option for tournaments.

Thoughts?

I would support this suggestion.

As In the scenario described, it is frustrating to check on the progress of the game at regular intervals during the day, and find that no moves have been made but then someone moves during nighttime in my time zone and my clock moves on.

Also it makes it possible for a player who is not scoring well within the game to use time manipulation tactics against a higher-scoring player to win or place higher in a game they would otherwise lose.

You can add it to the bug section/suggestion part and ask people to vote for the ticket to lure more attention from admins.

there is already a tournament option where the clock only counts down during a predefined 12 hour window. This prevents situations like the one above. The problem with adding something where every player has a different 8 hour window is that you now have a game that could last an undefined amount of time...even if everyone only has a 36 hour clock you could have a game take several months because of the 8 hour grace window.
