World Clock

Post by Camille Rita »

I think it would be a great idea to have a world clock on this site to see when our opponents in turn based games might be available to play. Perhaps, something where we could input on our profile the times we are available in our time zone. I've noticed sometimes there is the "sleep mode" symbol next to my name during hours I am awake (normal daytime hours for my time zone) and logged on. Sometimes I can't tell if the hours indicated for playing a particular game are in my time zone or not. Perhaps I am missing something there. What do you think?

I support this as well. It would be nice to have some control over what time zone it thinks I am in (or at least be able to set it to one that matches my strange work/sleep schedule). It would also be extremely helpful to be able to restrict games to people in close time zones (rather than just by language or skill). If I get into a turn-based game with two other players, and we are each about 8 hours apart (has happened), the game can take a terribly long time.

Some words about the way time works on BGA:

All times are displayed in local time (or at least the time the browser thinks it is in). A function like getTimezoneOffset() or something similar is used for this purpose.

There is no need to try to restrict playing time by timezone. If you are playing at 4 moves per day or slower, you are already committing to a long game. {Even if people play faster, they are allowed to use all of their thinking time for each move.) If you are playing fast turn-based at more than 4 moves per day, you can arbitrarily set the playing hours. So someone who works the night shift and does their gaming from midnight to 5am can still chose to play games.
