Settings for arena

Post by fafa-fr »

Hi Castles of Burgundy players.

What settings would you like for Arena?

I think that for a competitive setting, Identical (random) board for all players might be better than Random board without board 8, because even without board 8, boards are not perfectly balanced.
What do you think about this?

And now that I implemented a user preference to be able to choose 1st edition or 2019 edition art, regardless of the table's settings, we can also choose which edition ruleset would fit best for arena, without considering personal graphical preferences. (See differences here, basically different number of points for knowledge tiles 15 and 26, different rule for knowledge tile 6, and possibility to buy a tile during an action in 2019 edition.)

I agree about identical random boards.

I'd prefer the original ruleset, because I don't like the newer rule that permits purchases mid-action. Buying better tiles from the middle already makes silver acquisition powerful: don't overpower it.

I also clearly vote for Identical Random Boards, as only this would perfectly balance a game.
To be honest I see big improvements in the new edition and also big weaknesses in the new edition.

Tile number 6 is utterly overpowered in the new version. It is completely broken and it was just fine in the original version.
This tile showing up in the new version in the first 2 phases just declares the winner who happens to be the first player to pick it up and win the game right there.

Tile 15 however is a clear improvement with 2 points per sold good.
Tile 26 was imo very well balanced in the original game and already a strong tile. Now it is clearly overpowered especially in 2 player games where it will often yield 12 VP's without any real efforts at all to achieve this amount of VP's. But even in a 4 player game this tile is very strong.

I love the new rule of in-between-action-buys. It deepens the gameplay and offers new options for very strong moves. It's a lot of fun imho.

So overall I just have to say easily old edition. If only tile number 6 would be like it used to be it would be an easy pick for the new edition imho.

I also vote for a 2 player setting in arena. With more players the weaker players can collude in some way against the strongest player.
1vs1 is just perfect for competitive games. It's a zero sum game then and I also think that this game is at it's deepest in a 2 player setting.
A 2 player setting would also reduce playing time by a large margin.
The 2 Player Settings would also work best with the ELO-System used on BGA.

I've not played it enough to be sure about this, but it seems powerful to me, indeed. (And also to several players (including you) in this BGG thread.)

I fully agree.

I'll answer this in your thread about this suggestion.
