Very bad reputation

Today I saw a guy having 0% reputation.
Apart from asking myself how this is possible, my question would be, why those players are not banned from the platform, so that decent players does not have to cope with them in other games.

It could be that they had some kind of emergency or connection problem in real life and were expelled from a few (turn-based) games in progress.

No one has to play with someone with a low reputation. Players can set filters that will prevent being matched with low reputation players.

I know that I can prevent this when opening games.
But it still happens, if others have opened them or in arena or in tournaments.

I haven't thought about that, might really happen if someone plays that heavily that he'd experience a lot of reputation loss at once.
Still I think, it's one thing to get some time and quitting penalties, but another to have very bad reputation score.

I’m in a very long game (since May) with a large group. I set the limit at the start that players had to have a very good reputation. One of the players has twice had his reputation plummet and then recover in that time. Each time he has been offline for several days and then reappeared, mostly he plays his turns in good time.

Because I set the time limit to once every two days he’s never timed out on my game…. I would never have wanted to play with him if he’d had the low reputation at the start but I’ve had no issues and would play with him again, though I might want to set a lenient time limit.

Arena only lets players with at least 100 ELO and 60% Reputation to join games.
Also, what you say makes little sense, in my opinion, because quitting/getting expelled also results in loss of karma (a.k.a. reputation score)...

I had 0% I think once or twice, and I got back to 100% in no time, because I found some tolerant players, for some fast games.

And I also mostly host games without Karma restricton.
If for instance (for arguments' sake) something bad happened to you and you got to 0% karma by accident, how would you feel if you weren't able to get back to at least 60%, every player refusing to play with you?

Even worse, if a low karma kicked a player from the site, that would encourage people to keep making new accounts whenever their karma dropped. People would then be paired against "unknown" opponents, rather than opponents who had demonstrated their behavior.

Ok, I agree, as I said, I haven't thought about being expelled from round based games if you have many of them going on and something more important than playing online board games happens in real life.

Still, event though it's possible to quickly drop (and then of course would be nice to get games again), the whole thing was invented for a reason, to see who keeps leaving games. Because it's really not nice for the opponents to having spent quite some time for a game just to see it being cancelled and thus understandable I guess, if I hesitate to play with those.

The karma system works very well.

If you care about the reputation of your opponents, create tables that restrict players based on your preferences.

If players just got banned for having a low karma they'd just create new accounts repeatedly, and then nobody would have any data or idea how reliable of a player their opponent was. This would be much worse than the current system where you generally do have a good idea of the reliability of your opponents.

I'll have to take your word for since I'm new here, but what's to stop anyones karma from plummeting because they got paired with a bunch of consecutive players who just downvote you for any reason (they lost, you used "too" much time not relative to the timer going negative but their own idea of too much", or any other silly reason).

I'm pleasantly surprised to know that it does work very well in practice though.
