I find that more and more players are conceding games. No comment, no thanking for playing, just clicking a button when a game is moments from finishing... they stuck with it until the other player is going to win within moments.... and they concede. Yes, the game was done, but really, does anyone else find this to be poor form? No one likes to lose, but where is the sportsmanship?
Conceding a game with grace.... a lost art?

Well, at least they didn't leave the game, which is worse and deserve a red thumb.
You can't filter players, except from reputation, while CONCEDING won't lower their reputation.
But remember, there are some possible reasons:
1. They never chat at all. In this case, nothing can be done. And u could give them red thumbs, which is ur right.
2. They have bad karma/ reputation, which can be avoided by karma limit when u set a table.
3.They don't speak your language, which can also be avoided by a language filter.
And sth i want to know, do u say hi or sth else when u start the game?
Or keep silence until the game end?
In my experience, I don't set language limit but karma limit(>50%).
>90% of time, I can have a decent game, no concede/kick.
But u will find some players who doesn't speak at all. Just get used to it, no hard feelings for that.
Most people here r nice, at least not harmful.

Edit: I saw u said ur a retired teacher? Let me remind u, even a 6yo can play on this site, so... u got it

Re: Conceding a game with grace.... a lost art?
Exactly as the player above said + when a player sees or feels he/she has no chance, she/he might want to run to start a new game, where she/he has a chance.
Or he/she might want to go for private life stuff.
The conceding player didn't rob you of the win (by quitting), didn't insult you, didn't do anything to you... so even though you consider his/her not wanting to stay with you 100% until the end of your winning game to talk or say "gg", a poor form... i don't consider any of this "poor sport" at all.
Just a silent conceding.
If you are so bothered by others conceding games you already won, or by the silence treatment, I suggest playing only games of 3+ players, or writing in the 2-players games that you might host, something regarding conceding or chat.
Have a lovely day.

I think the sportsmanship stands in the fact that the player played with you until the moment your win was decided, then conceded the game, to hurry up the end (as I see it).

I hate that too. If you wanna save time by conceding - fine, but then do it earlier. Not within the last minute before the game would end anyway. If you played this far, please let's see the final result!
But I don't take personal offense from this behaviour. I won't block them but I might make a comment that and why this concede feels bad to me.

I hope you will find this relieving, even if it is somewhat out of topic:
I recently conceded a game, but only because my opponent forgot to play the last move and was out of time, in addition to that he was CLEARLY winning.
That is sportsmanship!

Re: Conceding a game with grace.... a lost art?
Well, I usually appreciate it when the opponent resigns from a clearly loosed game; on the contrary, I find it tiring an opponent who insists in playing such a game to the end, forcing me to play mechanically for a while.
I add that I only play abstract games which are boring to play out once things are decided; this is particularly evident with, for instance, Hex: a game is often demonstrably decided soonish and playing to the end a dozen (or more!) of obligated moves is largely a loss of time. So, I feel there is more etiquette in resigning than in insisting; and I do this myself, as soon as I see I have unevitably lost. I also speak very little (I find "speaking with a screen" unrewarding) but I usually (but not always; for instance in tournaments I tend to be even more silent) precede my resignation with at least a "gg".
But perhaps with different kinds of games things are different, I do'nt know.

Re: Conceding a game with grace.... a lost art?
My background is in Chess, where almost every game ends in concession - often a concession just before the opponent wins. So it seems normal to me and doesn’t bother me.
It’s great when people chat but it’s no big deal if they don’t - sometimes people have a phone it’s hard to type on, sometimes they are in a hurry and need to get back to work/childcare or whatever it is.
To be honest what annoys me more is when people take forever over simple moves - I often suspect they are browsing something else in another window and wasting my time. Conceding if anything saves my time!

Re: Conceding a game with grace.... a lost art?
I conceded a game today because my opponent admitted to having "the best hacks". This came up during a conversation where I experienced a very unusual incident in a previous game of Senet where my opponent received fifteen turns in a row where their piece moved very quickly. Multiple turns are possible in Senet but fifteen in a row is unheard of. The very idea of playing games with people who feel they have to cheat to be on top disgusts me to no end. Without proof, I can't report these people without potentially bringing punishment upon myself but they know who they are and they won't have me around to facilitate their ill gotten scores. I wish all of you who don't cheat a fond farewell. I'm done playing games here.
