I want to learn a new board game to play on BGA, which should I choose?

Post by watershipdown »

Hello,

I am currently looking for a second game to play on BGA. The game I have played for year and recently on BGA is Agricola. So I am looking for a second game to learn out of the list I will provide below, what do you all suggest? I am looking for something somewhat similar to Agricola but that isn't super complicated. Thank you for your input.

Terra Mystica
Viticulture
Lost Ruins of Arnak
Puerto Rico (I have played this in the past, would be the easiest one for me to learn)

That sounds great, but I would prefer to learn one at at time until I get a good handle on it.

You can play in training mode and/or restrict the tables to beginners only if you feel more comfortable with that. But in all seriousness, nobody cares, you're welcome to play at any table, and I would suggest you take advantage of that ;)

Which one of those games if your favorite?

They're all good, or great, games. (I'm not too keen on Viticulture but I know lots of people love it. My personal order is TM > Arnak > PR > Viticulture - but none are "bad" games.) Just pick which one appeals to you most and go for it!

If you're really looking for a game to sink your teeth into for depth of replay-ability, then it's Terra Mystica.
Arnak is a lot of fun, I rate that too.
Puerto Rico is a classic, and for a reason, it's a great game and can be very cut throat.
Viticulture I have the least experience with, it felt a bit dry to me. I didn't understand the balance of the cards too much, some of the big money cards are obviously better earlier on. The build up was a bit too slow but the point scoring crescendo at the end was very good.

Feast of Odin is nearly released, and there is La Granja if gardening is really your thing.

My personal big game favourites on BGA are innovation (chaotic, fun and tense), and Lewis & Clark (planning and combos).

If you like RFTG then there is also New Frontiers to try. You'll be able to play that even without reading the rules.

Terra Mystica looks sweet but when I look at the games that are waiting to be filled, there are so many different expansions. I think I will put that one on the back burner for now. Viticulture has been ranked low by those who ranked my selection of games and also looked the least interesting to me. I am going learn Puerto Rico (since I have played in the past and liked it) and Lost Ruins. Thank you for your input.

If you select manual (rather than automatic) you can then set up a game yourself and choose whichever parameters you like, although I appreciate that if you’re learning a game you don’t necessarily want to be host.
