Fencing before the 2nd harvest

Post by watershipdown »

In a situation where you have 8 wood (currently I have 3 rooms, 2 people and 0 reed), and you want to fence before the second harvest, is it better to build 2 one square pastures or 1 4 square pasture?

I'm only a very mediocre Agricola player, but surely the answer is "it depends". 2 1-square pastures lets you keep 2 each of 2 different animals, one 4-square one lets you keep up to 8 animals but of only 1 type.

Of course you can later divide up your large pasture if you have the wood and time to do it.

And surely it only takes 7 wood to build 2 1-square pastures, if you build them next to each other.

Agreed very much with it depends.

I'd rarely fence that early with my wood either, usually I'd just try to gather enough wood to fence fully, or I'll just build another room. Breeding and holding animals is nice, but the early harvests are spaced out enough that you don't get that much value out of starting to breed during the stage 2 harvest vs like the stage 4 harvest.

I appreciate both your advice. I looked back at this particular game and my last 4 turns were build room, meeting place, 4 wood action and 3 wood action. I couldn't pass up on that juicy wood and now I have to figure out what to do with it. I'll collect reed for my 4th room.
