Left or right ?

What's the convention when 2 cards of the same number are scored ?
Half of the players play left, the other half right.
Is there a rule there and a rationale ?

Bonjour,

(Sorry, no French from me. I can get most of the meaning via Google Translate.)

Assuming the clue isn’t a possible save (number clue touching chop, same number previously discarded so that the marked chop could be a unique card… or a few other unusual cases that you’d have to build up experience to recognise from context) you would be expected to play the leftmost card touched. You may have to wait for finessed cards to play out (and watch for a bluff response, which tells you not to play at all).

The reason is that the leftmost card is generally the newest card in your hand, therefore most likely to be clued for a play now. The others are more likely to have been clued earlier. Regard the most likely as the default, and correct (or expect correction) for the less-likely cases.

As Romain says, for 1s, they all play out (unless Black Powder is in play), but this isn’t really an arbitrary special case. It’s because all 1s are playable at the start of the game. Players are expected not to mark duplicate 1s, so that they will eventually be discarded and not cause misfires, so any 1s that are marked should be playable. If you reach a point where all 1s are played, and so all 2s are playable (or trash, which should not be marked) then you should be expected to treat marked 2s the same way. And so on as all 3s become playable, etc.

Black Powder shakes things up, but you should read the existing threads on Black Powder play.

But there is an exception. Many (but not all) high-level players will clue a playable, non-saveable card on chop with a number if it cannot be clued with a colour. We do this because otherwise the card will be lost. Be aware of this possibility. If we wanted to clue the left card by number instead, we would wait for the card on chop to be discarded.

(On appelle ça le Good Touch Principle.)
