I want to learn how to develop/programme/consult new board games!

Post by agressiveslug »

Hey,
TL DR;
I want to help develop/programme a game.
I want someone to help me learn how to develop/programme a game.

I'm a super passionate gamer.

I'm an engineer by trade. Pretty computer literate, but have no experience in developing, programming a new game.
I have 2 games in mind which I would love to see come to BGA.
The games would be perfectly suited for an online adaptation, and I wouldn’t imagine them being too complex to create, compared to other games I’ve seen and played on BGA.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I admire your enthusiasm, but I have to say: the BGA framework is pretty tricky, even frustrating in parts, and to work effectively with it you need at a minimum a fair experience of web technologies - I would recommend knowing at least Javascript and CSS fairly well, as well as having some knowledge of PHP and HTML. (And a tiny bit of SQL, but you can probably pick up the little you need for BGA without many problems while developing the game.)

There are plenty of free resources online to learn about these things - I'd highly recommend you gain at least a basic understanding, by making smaller projects in those languages, before jumping headfirst into the BGA framework.

Having said that, I could be wrong - you could try signing up for BGA studio, reading the docs and going through the tutorials (which show you how to build a simple game, with full code samples), and seeing what you feel. If you're not intimidated by that and feel you actually have a good understanding of say 60% or more of it, then by all means have a go at a simple game adaptation. There's a BGA developer's discord channel where people are happy to answer questions, including from beginners :)

Ho Ho AggresiveSlug!

I am veteran programmer that does not care about the language and a beginner developer on BGA. I am currently working on Decrypto. I believe a lot in pairing and clean code, I feel the framework is easy to learn with someone.

It will be a pleasure to share. You can ping me directly.

Have a great day!
Sebastien
