Creating a Tutorial to contribute to BGA

Post by Gentleman Jack »

I am attempting to create a tutorial for a game that currently has none. Unfortunately my attempts are being hampered by the fact that I cannot run a training game from the same IP. This is necessary in order to draft the correct game assets into the match to fit the script, so that maximum rule explanation is achieved. I realize that a premium account would rectify this; however this is supposed to be a way to contribute even when not a premium member; with the possibility to become a member from the work if the tutorial becomes official. I'd like to inquire if someone at BGA could allow for my accounts (my account and my roommates to be clear) to temporarily run training games from the same IP for the sole purpose of creating a tutorial. I have tried to find a suitable existing match; however I have not found one that is recent enough to be used as a tutorial with the advanced replay options.

Thanks for your time,

Jack

Maybe you can ask a friend (from a different IP) to play the game with you for the tutorial.
Or maybe open a table that says in the description something like "Looking for a player to play the game as I want to make a tutorial".

You might also join the group of Tutorial Makers https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=10196677 and ask there for help.

Nastaa and cigma, thank you for your feed back. I had hoped to just be able to create a game or two that is scripted in a manner that would streamline and capture all the elements of the game. Being able to run a 2 player game from the same location would make the process so much easier and much more efficient, but it is what it is I suppose. Thanks all...and cheers!

Thinking again, I wonder why this should be. I understand that playing from the same IP is disabled in order to avoid cheating (for ELO or ranking), but this is not the problem with training mode.

Also, as far as I understood, playing from the same IP is not he same thing as using hotseat mode. Hotseat mode means, 2 people are alternatly playing by the same device, as maybe passing a tablet from one to another and back. In between the turns there is a white screen, so you can't see the game from the other persons view (like cards in hand etc.). Hotseat mode is only possible with premium membership.

So I understand you tried to play a TRAINING game with your roommate and got a message that it was blocked because you used the same IP? And you used different devices? Then I think it is worth a suggestion to "allow training games from the same IP", for there are good reasons for this like making a tutorial or teaching the game live. You can make such a suggestion here: https://boardgamearena.com/bugs
I would vote for it!

Maybe you have checked this list https://boardgamearena.com/gamelist?sec ... tutorial=1 or the game page itself, but you should know that they only show tutorials with beta or live status.

There already might be a tutorial for this game in the early state of alpha phase, which can only be found out here: https://boardgamearena.com/tutoriallist ... n=allgames If so, you can enter the tutorial by clicking there on the name of the author. You might help the tutorial maker by voting, giving feedback or proofreading - not everyone is an english native and therefore very pleased if you check their sentences.

In any case, thank you for your efforts!

Cigma, again thank you for your ideas. I've taken your suggestion and posted it at the following location:

#62138: "Allowing games to be played from the same IP in training mode for creating tutorials."

https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=62138

I hope this effectuates a response or at least careful consideration.

Cheers!

You have my vote :-)

The chances of realisation increases with the number of upvotes, so it might help if you annonce it in the group of tutorial makers.
