Skipped Player Loss

Post by efalafel »

Can someone explain to me how I lost this tournament game: https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=256773126

I was in the lead, with negative 26 minutes, while another player had negative 6 1/2 hours. I get expelled from the game for time and the guy with negative 6 1/2 hours goes on in the tournament?

From the game log:
Move 233 :07:11:51
efalafel is out of time, so RayasRouge skips his/her turn
It looks like RayasRouge (who didn't run out of time) got somehow notified that players in their game were running out of time, and used their right to kick players over time. Unfortunately, by the time they got to the table / decided to kick, the game was waiting for your move, and therefore you were the player to be kicked (you can only kick a player when it's waiting for their turn).

It seems like there are 2 possible solutions BGA could consider: skipping in tournament games should either be completely disabled, or if someone is skipped from a game, the slowest player should be considered the loser, regardless of whose active turn it is.

Thank you for the insight. I agree, it seems like, especially in tournament play, the player with the most time overage should be the player that loses.

Even worse, a player who is very over time and is going to lose automatically when the game runs out of time will occasionally tactically skip a player who has just gone over by a few minutes, saving themselves. So sometimes it's a case of skip or be skipped.

I'm starting to think that the only fair solution is to immediately end tournament games as soon as one player runs out of time.

Otherwise, there's the perverse incentives problem. Someone who is winning the game wants it to finish normally. Someone who is losing the game wants it to be abandoned without result.

There also should be a much greater karma penalty for getting kicked from a tournament game for running out of time. There should be an option for tournament creators to exclude all people who have an abandoned tournament game in the last 30 or 90 days.
