Forum-Bug: Forum search results show text unquoted although it's within a quote

Post by Silene »

I'm wondering whether I'm the only one running into this bug repeatedly:

When I'm looking for a specific player's forum posts (mainly when I'm searching for a post that I know I wrote some time earlier), the beginning of all those posts are shown. That suggests that the text I see there is from the person I was searching for. But the preview-Text is often from other authors when it's within a quote.

example:
Image

--> I click on the number 570 to show all my previous posts which gets me here:

Image

--> the post marked A shows plain text
--> the post marked B shows quoted text (so quotes are possible to be shown obviously)
--> I click jump to post to see post A:

Image

--> here you see the post and that in fact the post A was not plain text but a quote. so it was nothing that I said but something I reacted to

This pattern is very confusing for people using the forums much. When I'm trying to find an old post of mine, I can't see it because instead I see a lot of stuff that's not even something that I said myself.

Sometimes I want to have a glimpse of what other players are saying on other subjects. The bug makes me think they said something while in fact they were fighting those statements and quoted it for that reason.

So am I the only one being bugged by this?

I think it might be related to multi-level-quoting. Maybe it's even an easy fix if someone wants to look into it, that would be great :D

For our forum, we use phpBB (https://www.phpbb.com/) and recently upgraded to the latest version (3.3.8).
You might want to raise a bug in that project's bug tracker https://tracker.phpbb.com/secure/Dashboard.jspa

I can't do that without an account. But whoever has may use my pictures if that is of any help.

Also I cannot give any specific information as to how the forum software is implemented on BGA-website. So I don't think I'd be qualified to make a helpful bug-report there anyway...

Indeed you would have to create an account.

We use it "as is", so your report would be appropriate.

Note that from what I see, I would say that the quote is displayed if the text is short enough, and that if the text is too long then there is an ellipsis and in that case there is no formatting applied. So probably more an implementation choice/constraint than an actual bug.
