Suggestion for pre-Arena heat up

Hey there folks!

I'm certain I'm not the only one here who is eagerly awaiting the end of the beta phase, in order for the Arena mode to start I simply love the competitive nature of it, which makes BGA really stand out for me.

That being said.... the next best thing I have found if to use the "Automatic" match-making option, instead of going for "Manual" table set up.

Specially selecting:
>>Random map "always"
>>Players "near" and "at" my level always, while the other ranking options as "never".

I believe this best recreates the spirit.

But... after having been matched repeatedly with the same players, I fear that unfortunately few people are playing this way.
So.... feel free to give this "pre-Arena" feeling a try

Just a question: Why is it important to play only "random" maps? If I was concerned with my ELO I would very much avoid certain "one card wins it all"-scenarios.
Sidi Rezheg Airfield is an example of a map where the Allied player risk being unable to make even a single move before having lost...


Any way - out of principle I never refuse to play new players - but I might try sticking more to my "own level" when Arena kicks off. Sounds like fun.

Just a question: Why is it important to play only "random" maps?

It is important to play at random scenarios to avoid players specializing only on a single map and playing that map continuously to climb the ranks at the damage of players who play all the scenarios. There are around 40 official scenarios, if I play, for instance, 200 games, I will play each one of them 5 times on average. Playing a scenario 5 times gives you the general sensation on what the optimal strategies of each faction are. However, playing a scenario 200 times allows you to perfectly know what do according to your initial set of cards, and, more generally, to master the scenario at perfection. Now matching a guy who has played 200 games exploring all the scenarios with a guy who has played a scenario over and over again for 200 times is just unfair.

There is also another reason (more philosophical and methodological if you want) to have random scenarios in arena. Arena is supposed to rank players according to their ability at that game. A player who only know how to play some scenarios does not "deserve" to be ranked high, because he lacks the knowledge and skills in all the other scenarios he does not play!

This is an important point, and I agree "one card wins it all" scenarios should not be played in arena! BGA automatically selects some "gurus" for each game, and those gurus have the possibility to discuss and decide the modality that will be used for that game in arena. If you are selected as a guru (and I hope you will ), you will have the chance to propose which scenarios to exclude from the arena games for being "one card wins it all". Than your proposal will be voted by the gurus and eventually implemented!

Alright, if there are knowledgeable people sorting out the scenarios and/or "house rules" I'm not concerned. I think most veteran players of Memoir44 agree more or less on what a good scenario is.

And thanks for thinking of me as a possible "guru" - but I'm really not able to do ANY yoga poses, except perhaps "collapsed dog" if that exists...

There are certain scenarios which are just not balanced or can be won with 1 card etc that are just not fun to play.
Adding additional scenarios would spice things up and when we had tournaments the scenarios chosen mainly tended to be the balanced ones
