Space Base: Propsed Variant to remove UES Gordon 7981-G

Post by BDK aka K4 »

Anyone else in favor of a variant that removes the "UES Gordon 7981-G" card from play? This is the card that goes in the 7 spot where all other playes lose four points and that player still gets to buy two cards!

It's the only card that removes points from other players. In my view it breaks the game. I've been in several game, especially with four or five players, where the person with this card comes from far behind and wins the game.

It also just feels like it goes against the whole spirit of the game. I don't know how else to say this, but it just feels wrong. The game stops being fun when this card comes into play.

It might be the most warping cards or among the top few game-warping cards, so I can see an argument for it being against what some may consider the "spirit" of the game (if a spirit of the game isn't mentioned in the rulebook, hard to claim one exists though.)

I think it's very possible to adapt your strategy when it shows up at the start of the game. You have to play more income-focused lines for a big explosion of points in the last few rounds, and can't get away with strategies that give you slowish drips of points to get to 40. That's just playing the game strategically IMO.

When it shows up midgame and someone gets to use it a bunch, I agree that's pretty unfun and weird relative to other mechanics in the game. But I don't see that happening very often.

There's a subforum for each game discussion

Not only does it belong there, not here, but I believe the developer may get notifications about new posts there (at least there are some devs who seem to respond within hours to new posts in subforums for their games). Even if they don't get a notification, they are more likely to be actively monitoring the subforum actually dedicated to the game they developed.

Devs don't automatically subscribe to their games' subforums. Neither does BGA enforces this behavior, so it is developer dependent.

Although you are of course right, if the game dev lurks the forums, they're most likely looking at forums of the games they develop and/or play

Above and beyond anything said here, the Devs are supposed to keep to the original game, even if the original game has issues like this one!
although perhaps a variant start would be okay...
