Schedule a time to play turn based games

Post by ExaltedAngel »

Hi, I recently started playing in a couple tournaments that have their matches set as turn-based. I don't really like that system, but it appears to be the mostly (if not the only) used in tournaments. Is it allowed to try to schedule in chat a time when all players of a game can meet and play the game all at once? I mean, I see no reason for not allowing it, but want to be sure, since I checked 4-5 games and in none it appeared to be done. Additionally I tried to ask to an opponent of an 1v1 game to do so and he didn't even reply at all, while still playing the game, so I started to doubt there might be something wrong with it.
Thank you for your replies

What you are proposing is trying to impose a real-time format onto a turn-based tournament. Why? Why don't you just create a real-time tournament? By definition if someone signs up for it they are committing to play at that time. You don't need to chat with anyone. If you can't get people to sign up for it, then that tells you: 1) they don't like the time, or 2) they don't want the real-time format.

The biggest problem I see with your proposal is that it's unenforceable. All it takes is one person not playing in real time to completely ruin that tournament.

The reasoning was explained - it's much easier to find turn-based tournaments.

The answer here is unequivocally yes it is allowed to "ask" your opponent to schedule a time to play in pseudo-real-time, but also it is completely unenforceable. Just a gentleman's thing if you'd both prefer to get through your game more quickly/continuously. Some people may not even respond as you've noticed. No one "has" to do anything - we're just here playing games

Please also consider that not everyone on BGA speaks english. This may be a reason why they didn't react. While there is a google translation feature in the chat window, some players don't know about it. And in some languages the translation is not useful.

The OP's unstated premise is that there are a bunch of people out there who want to play real time, but they can't find real time tournaments and so they are in turn-based tournaments and if you can just talk them into playing real-time they'll do it. Maybe. Or maybe the simpler explanation is that they are in turn-based tournaments and it's easier to find turn-based tournaments....because that's what they want to play.

It's also possible that real-time is disfavored in whatever game the OP wants to play. As of right now there are over 70 real-time tournaments open for registration, so it's not like they can't be found.

I'm not trying to impose anything, or to create a new way to play turn-based tournaments, I only asked if it's ok to ask people if they want to play "real-time" by meeting at an agreed time.

Also I won by timeout both of my turn-based matches so far, so I'm not even trying to get an advantage out of it, just trying to improve the qol in such games

This is just your speculation, I never stated, nor intendend, anything like this

I've had people ask me a few times. Sometimes I'm happy to, sometimes I only have time to play a few moves in real-time and want to go afterwards, or want more time to think about a specific move. I once felt quite pressured to play RT when I didn't want to, so I'd say it's fine to ask, but if the person says no, don't start suggesting other possible times or pressing for a reason.

You do not intend to approach people registered for turn-based tournaments to ask them to play in real-time conditions by scheduling a time to meet?

The original question talks about tournaments, but doesn't seem to be specifically about tournaments. Also, it doesn't imply that there are other people who want to play real-time but can't, but that there are other people who would be OK playing real-time if offered (or asked) the possibility. Either way, it seems to me a reasonable assumption and there's no harm in asking, as long as you're not offended by a negative or no answer. Personally, I avoid turn-based like the plague, but sometimes there's no other way to get a table, I'm more than happy to play a turn-based game in real-time, and have done that a few times (without anyone asking, we just happened to be online and played all our moves in a single session).
