Catan Going after the leader at 9 points

Just had this situation:
Leader has 9 points and longest road, me and the other player has 4 points. I can capture the LR card but need 2 roads.
On my hand I have 4 wheat cards that I offer to trade for 2 timber and 2 bricks. Trade is completed an I got the road card.
Didn't matter since I lost it to the leader at the next round and he won.

Is this ok?

Yes? Why wouldn't it be okay?
You made the trade to further your own game, not for the sake of helping someone else win.
