Conceding

Post by ken52682 »

There needs to be a way of conceding the game. Especially if your opponent can beat you but is prolonging the game just to be a jerk.

I actually disagree, I think people should enter games ready to play them through - not everyone is playing for ELO, and it isnt much fun when you are having a great game and your opponent stops trying.

I empathize about dragging games out, but thats not going to happen too often, unless your opponents really don't like you.

Actually, for 2 people game, I think conceding would be a good option (especially as it does not matter how badly you lose from an ELO point of view).

It is sometimes very depressing to keep on playing Dominion while you have 8 or 9 curses and you only wait for your opponent to finish to purchase all the provinces. And, it is probably not very fun for your opponent either...

However, it is clear that for 3 or more people games, that would be a bad option as having a "phantom" player kills the pleasure (and can even change the outcome) for the leading players. It would not be fairplay to play that game until the end.

The problem is if you let people concede, they will concede games that they could win. This will reduce the enjoyment of the site, even if it helps save some time. Everyone has to slog through a long game once in a while, but its really not a big deal

(Also statistics will be a lot less meaningful)

I should add that there is also a risk that some players use this functionality to increase their ELO artificially by playing against themselves.

In my opinion, reputation system is the solution: if some player is prolonging the game intentionally, you can give him a red thumb (or tell him that you will if he does not finish the game soon).

I am not really convinced by the point that people would drop games they could win. That would not happen very often according to me.

But the point made by souris that people might want to play against themselves to increase their ELO is actually a very good point. So I have to agree, a conceding option would be a bad thing...

A bit OOT but still in the same general topic...

About red thumbing player, is it possible that I keep the list of the player I red thumbed? Some players (probably their friends) green thumbed them and when I face him again, I won't really remember that this is the player I dont like to play with, so I would prefer my own preference than the reputation given there.

I know this will need a bit space and might slow things down, but this is just a suggestion :)

High-level, professional, 2-player games end in concession - Chess, Go, Starcraft. It is bad-mannered to prolong a game that you have lost.

Everyone enjoys close, competitive games. Once the game is clearly over it is awful to play out the stretch, whether you are winning or losing.

Concession needs to be an option, at LEAST in 2-player games.
