Real-time switched to turn-based.

Post by LucaKl »

Hi. A question for you.
I was just playing a 7WD real-time game, and while I was having a good position (idk how call that, I’ll just use the chess term), my opponent disconnected and ran out of time. I did not expell him and was waiting for him to reconnect, when suddenly the game mode changed to turn-based. No “accept” buttons appeared, nothing. I might not be able to be online every 3 days, so I didn’t want to participate in a turn-based game.

I don’t understand what happened. Was it a lag on BGA? Is there such a Premium feature (we both are premium)? Or was he a cheater that didn’t want to loose karma and/or ELO?

What should I do?

P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

Hi LucaKi,

I believe either player can switch the game to Turn-based, regardless of whether the other person agrees or not. I've done it every once in a while as a courtesy to the other player when I can see they are having technical issues (instead of kicking them out). However, now I make sure to ask first, because I got yelled at by one player for doing that. Most of the time people are appreciative, though.

Eventually if I don't hear back, I'll make a judgment call, or simply end the game. I figure if they really don't want a turn-based game, we can either abandon, or else they will let the clock run down, and I'll end the game then.

I myself have appreciated the couple times when someone switched a game to turn-based after a crash on my end, but that's been very rare. People on BGA seem happy to kick people out willy nilly (without even a query), even when it's clear that the other person isn't lagging on purpose.

Anyway, that's a long answer to your question, but I agree that having more choices would be ideal.

Cheers and good luck,
juju

I don't think you can switch to turn-based without all other player agreeing... except if a player is out of time, then that player automatically agrees. At least that's how it works for abandoning, and I think it's the same for switching to turn-based. I'm not sure what happens if you run out of time into red, and then get back to positive time, maybe you have to agree or maybe not. I see that you have a "timeout" notice (not penalty) for your current game (https://boardgamearena.com/player?id=94 ... reputation), so that's probably what happened. Maybe it was not your opponent who disconnected, but you, and since you had lost connection with the server, it looked to you as if your opponent was not doing nothing. Next time, try reloading whenever you see something "strange" (like people not responding) going on.
