Mockingbird can't mock a sparrow/swift - is this a bug?

Post by Cos- »

Several birds have the brown power to move to a different habitat if there is no bird to their right.

When playing this game in person, we've always interpreted the rules to mean that if there's a mockingbird or catbird to the right of one of those habitat-changing birds, and there's nothing to the right of the mockingbird/catbird, then it can mock that power, and move habitats.

Recently I played a northern mockingbird to the right of a chimney swift (which can change habitats), and when I activated the habitat on the next turn, it would not allow me to choose the swift's power when my cube was placed on the mockingbird. So I had permanently disabled the swift's power, by locking it in place with a mockingbird, when I had not intended that.

Based on the text of the rules I can sort of see both interpretations as being plausible. Is the way BGA does it, the way it is really supposed to be? And if so, can the text for the mockingbird and catbird be clarified somehow? Or, is this a bug in the BGA adaptation, and it should be allowed to mock that power when there's nothing to the right of the mockingbird?

This is implemented correctly. The operative word for the mockingbird and catbird is "repeat" rather than "copy", which does not appear in the base game of Wingspan. A bird with a repeating power is not able to use the migrating bird's power to move itself, it can only cause the bird with a migrating power to change habitats if the migrating bird is the rightmost bird in its habitat.

If you play one of those 2 Brown-Power-Repeating Birds (the Catbird and the Mockingbird)... let's say, in Forest, to the right of (let's say) White Breasted Nuthatch (cache 1 Grain), when you play Forest and you activate them, you will see that when you are activating the Catbird/Mockingbird, the Grain goes on the Nuthatch. Then another Grain on the Nuthatch, by activating the Nuthatch itself.

The Mockingbird/Catbird makes you able to Repeat a Brown Power of a Certain Bird, on that Certain Bird itself!
It's not like the Mockingbird/Catbird performs the action that it's repeating, by itself (otherwise the Grain in the case above would have been cached on the Mock/Catbird itself).
They just let a bird repeat its power, but your Chimney Swift's Brown Power was already crushed by the placing of that Mock/Cat Bird, to its right.

Basically: The Habitat-Changing Powers always have to stay to the right of everything.
