What is good about "liking" others?

After every game I usually "like" whoever played with me and didn’t act like an *.

But I’m wondering: what is good about it? Does being "liked" bring any benefits?

Can I find out if someone has ever "liked" me?

Interesting question. Not too long after being on BGA I was giving someone a red thumb and got the message I could not do so because I had not given out enough green thumbs to be allowed to.

Exactly. You can only give red thumbs if you give a multiple of green thumbs (to prevent players from spamming red thumbs). For the person receiving the green thumb, it prevents them from hitting a karma penalty. As soon as your ratio of received red thumbs to green thumbs exceeds some value like 10%, you will get a karma penalty.

So it works kind of like reputation, it's just not very obvious.

Following up on the other responses, there are two green thumb to red thumb ratios. One affects when you get a karma penalty for receiving red thumbs (the 10% threshold mentioned above), and the other affects how many red thumbs you can give out (I think it's currently one red thumb for every 5 green thumbs, but it isn't in the FAQ). Note that the second restriction on red thumbs you can dole out applies *public* red thumbs, i.e., the ones that can affect karma. There is no restriction on private red thumbs that prevent you from being matched with someone in non-tournament games, but don't affect the recipient's karma.

You can't tell if someone has given you a green thumb, and there are only roundabout ways of telling who has given you a red thumb.

Thank you very much for all the explanations. I'm assuming that "red thumbs" here means general red thumbs, which are meant to be a general warning to everyone, and not red thumbs, which are my personal opinion and basically just mean that I want to avoid a particular player. Is that right? Or will I also be penalized if I try to avoid too many players?

There are no penalties for either type of red thumb (for the person giving it). You simply can't give unlimited public red thumbs without balancing them with green thumbs. By the way, I like how you refer to them as "general" red thumbs. The term public red thumb seems odd seeing as neither the public nor even the person receiving it can actually see that it has been given. The term is probably meant to imply that it has a public effect, in the form of a karma hit, but the name sounds like the red thumb itself is publicly viewable.
