Timer clarification

Post by RamuneGuy »

Hi there,

Could someone clarify the timer for me? This pertains only to turn-base games.

As I understand it, once you have gone overtime, your opponents have the ability to choose to kick you. Does this mean that even if you are "on-time" for all your subsequent turns, your opponent has the opportunity to kick you no matter what?

I pride myself as being a fairly consistent player, but I'm not online at the same time zones at many other players because it seems like the majority of the games I join are in EU or Asia. I elect for the faster games because I want a faster experience, but I don't have the time to be at my computer all the time so I don't want to do a real-time game.

So I seem to run into a dilemma that if I play a turn, and then go to bed - by the time I wake up, I am over time. And then my opponent has the option at every turn to kick me at their own timing.

I enjoy playing the game and I want to keep playing but - I don't see why I would continue investing effort into a game if my opponent can kick me at any time. From what I could see, I was doing quite well in 2 of these games where I had gone slightly over time, but then I was kicked on a subsequent turn.

Can someone shed some light? If so, maybe I just have to go for the 12 hour timer games. That's quite disappointing, and a bit unsportsmanlike for these players.

Two things.

1 - they can only kick you while you are in negative time. You gain time back each turn (depending on game speed), so if you get back into the positive, you can no longer be booted.

2 - do you know that fast turn based games are set to different time zones/ranges? Only join ones that overlap with your awake time (the game starter chooses a 12 hour time range where the clock is active for all games faster than 4 turns/day, the other 12 hours use didn't count down). If you join 24/day games and are asleep over half the time the clock is running, you're going to get booted alot.

Thanks for your reply. I've actually been a bit confused about the clock as well. Is it set in a certain time zone, or is it shown in my current local time?

I would join a game that runs from 12:00am to 8pm, but only if its in my timezone.

Playing hours should be displayed in your timezone. I'm not sure how do double-check that your timezone is detected correctly though, except by playing a fast turn-based game and seeing if the timer runs as expected. Don't look at the forum, because the forum time settings are separate from the rest.

I think there are also quite a lot of people from the USA or Canada. But how to find them for possibly playing realtime games sometimes? I looked for some national gamers group and found this one (Canada Bored board games) for you: https://boardgamearena.com/group?id=4378522
I hope this helps!
