Why does playerrank show for some and not others?

Post by alextuesday »

When selecting a game to join, why does the rank (Beginner, Apprentice, Average, Good, etc.) show for some players but not for others? When learning a new game, I prefer not to play a high ranked player as it would be frustrating for them as my game play would be slower and frustrating for me as the game may be over before starting. I prefer to learn a new game with beginners and apprentice or learn a few tricks from an average or good player and stay away from the experts until I learn the game and my game play improves.

If the rank doesn't show, it's because they aren't any of those named ranks. I think Average is the one where it doesn't show. I agree, it's slightly confusing, but I just think of the blank rank as Average in my mind.

If you manually create a game, you can adjust settings so that only beginners and apprentices are able to join by clicking the link labeled "Restrict table access." But it may seriously increase the time it takes for the game to fill.

Alternatively, under automatic matching you can leave "I'm okay playing with: My level" set to the default (under Opponent's Level in Show advanced options) and set everything else to "I never want to play with."

Right. Those without a rank are Average: 100-200 elo.

Where is that magic link that lets you restrict tables to certain ELO ratings? Do you need to use the old version lobby for this?

I do it from the Play Now (multi-game) lobby, but it can be done from the single-game lobby. Under the Start button to the right of the number of players you will see a green icon with people coming out of (or going into?) a door. Click on that to filter by Opponent's level.

Although it seems weird to leave one rank blank, I appreciate the reply that the missing rank is Average players, I see that now. When I set up a game new to me, I do limit my selection to beginner, apprentice and average players. I like to learn the game with others but always like average players who have played the game for a while to watch and learn from them and for the lighter challenge than from a strong player level. Thank you for all the replies.

However, when you reach 100 elo in a game, you get a trophy that says "regular player", not average...
