People abandoning after they are knocked out

Post by TarAldar »

This has happened a few times, such as my latest game that I won. A player who doesn't reach the final abandons the game after round 7, instead of leaving. Meaning the whole game result is null, when the player involved was finished taking part anyway. Any way this can be changed?

There is no way to prevent a player from abandoning a BGA game for a karma penalty.

Ideally players should play round 7 and then leave.

After round 7 they are already knocked out, so there is no final round for them to play.

There may be some confusion.

All players always play round 7 in all modes, as you can see from a tournament card: https://boardgamegeek.com/image/7372445/challengers

After round 7 with 3+ players, some player(s) may be eliminated and may use the button to leave.

Apologies, for the thread I meant after round 7, not 6, which has confused things. I've edited my posts. Basically people are getting knocked out after round 7 and abandoning. I'll rewatch my replay to see what happened, but basically I beat somebody in round 7, got to the final but they abandoned and the final was void.

Yes, I rewatched the arena replay to be sure, during the final an eliminated player abandoned, so the whole game was voided & everybody else is declared a winner (so no real elo change). Attached a screenshot. In a ranked mode, where I've seen some smurfs that is a very abusable thing, it's happened a few times now.

I understand, but I'm not sure there is a way to fully avoid it. Even if the player is automatically eliminated, which isn't ideal because the goal is to let them observe the final, they could still choose to punish their karma by abandoning early, for example during round 7 when they realize victory is unlikely.

The solution to this problem is to use a red thumb and report the player to moderation, in my opinion. If a player is repeatedly abandoning games to sabotage others, that is easy for a moderator to observe.

I believe eliminated players in King of Tokyo can still observe but have no option to abandon once they're eliminated.

When I played King of Tokyo I seem to remember it's not easy to observe in turn-based games because the game vanishes from your list.

Challengers should work the same way however, if you actually click the button to eliminate yourself, you shouldn't be able to abandon (though there would be no reason to).

Yeah, I play King of Tokyo and have never seen it.
