It's automatic, just select the cards

But the in game instructions always says “player to select gear” or something like that. Yet there is no way to select anything but speed cards. I’m so confused in this game. I’m about a half track behind everyone else in my first game right now.

I want to like this game, but I’m lost at the moment.

Have you read the instructions or used the tutorial?

U can play single player game first to practice, if u r premium.
Or watch other's replay would help too.

The benefit of the tutorials on here is that they let you get familiar with the interface used for a game without having to learn it at the same time as you're playing a game for the first time.

I agree that it can be confusing for newbies.

The thing is this: BGA implements the "Tournamement Rules" which are explained in the advanced rules booklet (page 11 in my version of the rules). As I understand from some previous mention of this by the devs, this was suggested by the designer.

But a newbie will not read not advanced rules and can therefore be confused.

I don't see an easy solution.
One solution (but it's quite some work) would be to have messages for newbies like you have in Barrage (and other games) to explain a few extra things and reminds newbies of a few things.
A message could explain that you select cards and your gear will be automatically set accordingly (1 gear per card played)
But this only makes sense in a comprehensive approach with multiple messages throughout the game which I think is an overkill for a simple game like Heat.

Another (imho better) solution would be to "half-separate" step 1 and step 2:
As a player option (selected by default), the player would first select gear and then the cards.
But it would still functionally function like integrated steps 1 and 2 because the result of step 1 would not be published to the other payers until the start of step 3. (This is really the key point in the tournament rule: you don't see what gear the other players are using until you have chosen your cards)
