Do you need the brakes on to land?

Post by GrilledCheeseSandies »

If you manage to get the plane into the airspeed territory of -3 and you both place a 1 for the engines in the final landing, could you land the plane while the brakes aren't engaged?

The victory condition just says 'less than the brake value' and the brake value is at 0 as far as I know?

I am not sure what you mean by "airspeed territory of -3", but the rulebook says: "Contrary to the Flaps and Landing Gear, you do not need to deploy all your brakes . But they cannot be below 2, as this will result in your plane being unable to stop on the runway, and crashing." Does this answer your question?

Wind module can either increase or decrease the speed.
Logically 0 or below would be able to stop the plane, but you should ask the developer or the publisher to be sure.

As confirmed by the designer: you need to deploy at least 1 brake no matter your speed. The brake is not at 0 at the start of the game, there is no number to the left of the brake marker

Ah, good to know! Do you happen to have a link as to where this was clarified?

He clarified in a email as I had the exact same question when implementing the wind module.

Ive added his answer here: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/316205 ... es-all-neg

And to make it easy, here is his response (and how it is implemented on BGA):

"There is no value printed behind the brake token if we don’t move it.
So even -1 / 0 / 1 are not behind.
So we need at least one level of brake to validate a landing"

Thanks :)! That's very helpful to know, I think we're still going to attempt it ourselves as a funny achievement :D

What you can do, is put the brakes on 2, use wind and play 4/5 speed in total and still win :) I just did that

Follow up question:
So even with 1 brake (max2), does the end value have to be positive ? I imagine a 0 to be fine, but what with a -1 ?
With windspeed of -3 that would theoratically be possible, right ?

While we're on the topic of brakes... let's talk ICE BRAKES!

Ice brakes are a different animal! If your scenario has ice brakes, be prepared to start applying them early.

1) The ice brake track has four positions instead of the regular three.

2) Each of those four positions requires two dice (placed as sets of two, in the same round no less). Two 2s, two 3s, two 4s, and two 5s in that order. That's a total cost of eight dice just for brakes!

3) The pilot can place all eight ice brake dice themselves. I think that's impractical. The co-pilot can place up to four of those eight dice. I think it's a good idea to let the co-pilot help.

4) Ice brakes must ALWAYS be FULL ON to win. Partial ice brakes will never do regardless of airspeed.

For all those reasons, I believe that teams need to start setting ice brakes early. I don't think round one is too early!

If you want to try your hand at ice brakes, give the Yellow LaGuardia scenario a go.
