Allowing players to quit without spoiling the game for others

Post by dimexi »

There are times when a player just wants to finish their game early, either because they have fallen behind so far, and it is a chore to keep playing on. (Which is only true online), in others it is an emergency etc.

There should be a way for them to do this and still allow the rest of the players to carry on playing to the end, for the full glory of winning. I know that for some games this would not work due to the mechanics of the set up and the way the game is played. (7 wonders for example). But there are many games where them leavuing would have no impact at all. (for example Heat).

Could the developers have a look into this please? Other people could suggest the games that this option would work for.

The other benefit of this would be that the leaving player would be able to do so without incurring a penalty and this would encourage them to do so, rather than just stopping play and the rest of the players having to sit a wait for ages for their time to come to an end.

Thanks

In many games you can continue to take turns when a player is expelled or quits. Depending on the game implementation, it may just skip their turn. You aren't forced to leave. There is just a dialog telling you that you may leave without a penalty.

But I do not want an incentive for someone not to live up to the agreement they made when they clicked "accept" to play the game and not simply quit because they aren't winning (I'm not talking about resigning/conceding in chess or Go other other abstract two-player games). The karma penalties for doing that are there because that is undesirable behavior. Many games are completely ruined when someone quits. What do you do with all of the pieces that person has already placed?

Note that the autoplay must be coded by the developer of each game. It can't be generalized, because what the player will do must be a valid move in the game.
If the game allows a player to pass, that is the obvious move, but if not, what should the developer decide?

This is not something that is defined in the game rules, so it's really up to the developer to decide what to do.
Most of the time, it's worth not getting too deep into such automoves, because the game is broken anyway.

If you can propose a simple action to do for a specific game, you can report it as a suggestion : https://boardgamearena.com/bugs
