Tournament types

The tournament types have changed since I last created one & I just want to check the difference between two types before I create some more.
Previously the Round Robin type could be divided into groups and at the start of a tournament all the matches each player had would start simultaneously. Eg If there were 4 players per group each would get games against the other three immediately the tournament started.
There is no option to choose groups in the Round Robin type now. So does that mean that each player in a Round Robin tournament will get games against all the other players in the tournament as soon as it opens? Eg If I set up a Round Robin tournament with 10 players in it would they immediately get games to play against the other 9 when the tournament commenced?
As regards Group stage tournaments do the players just play one opponent at a time? Eg If there are 4 in a group would each player just get a game against one opponent at a time rather than all the other 3 at the same time?
Help with this would be much appreciated.

Regarding round robin, I think it still works that way based on people periodically complaining about being placed in games they "didn't sign up for" and it turning out that they had entered a round robin. Have you considered a Swiss format instead of a round robin if you think you're likely to get an unwieldy number of players for a round robin?

As for the group stage setup, I'm not familiar with how it works on here.

Thank you for taking the time & trouble to reply. I unknowingly fell into the round robin trap when I set up my first series of tournaments. I thought I would get 32 players maximum, so I chose just 8 groups thinking there would be a maximum of 4 players per group. However, the tournaments were popular and as many as 90 players registered for them. I also assumed that a Round Robin would be as it is in sport. I thought each player would just have one opponent at at time. It was a huge shock to many & also myself when each tournament opened and each player got up to 10 matches to play simultaneously! That was far too many for some & they had to withdraw from the tournament. It would have been far better if there had been an option to chose the maximum number of players in each group instead of the number of groups. That would have prevented the group sizes getting out of hand when the tournament creator has no idea how many will join the tournament.
The new group type of tournament should solve the dilemma I had as the number of players per group can be selected. I just wanted to know if each player in a group will get all the matches against the other members of the group as soon as the tournament opens or just play one other member at a time and not to play another member of the group until all in the group have also finished their game against an opponent in the group.
Regarding the Swiss format; yes I am going to use that in some of my tournaments as I know each player will just have games against one opponent per round.

Good luck. I've hosted a handful of tournaments and getting the settings dialed in just right can be difficult.

Thank you for your good wishes. Yes, it would be far better if there was guidance in BGA about the options in the tournament creation page. Rather a big gap in the help given by BGA really as tournaments are a major part of the site!

Try it like this: when creating the tournament, under "Tournament type" do not select "Round robin". Select "Groups Stage". Then you will see one box labelled "Tournament match configuration" (which you can fill out, things like game maximum duration and other options for the specific game) and another box labelled "Options for : Groups Stage". It's in this second box, that you can select Round robin for "Mode of stage 1" or "Mode of stage 2" or both.

If you have created a Groups stage tournament in which stage 1 is Round robin format, the default is for all games to begin immediately. For example if there are 4 players in each group, then each player would have 3 games beginning immediately. That is the default, there is a way to change it although it is somewhat clunky. No, they are not the same at all. When you choose "Groups Stage" it means that your tournament will have two stages; each stage having its own type. Your two types might, or might not, include round robin. The two types can be the same or different.

For example, you could create a Groups Stage tournament where the two stages are (1) Round Robin and (2) Single Elimination. Or you could create it with the same two types but in the opposite order. Or you could create it where the two stages are (1) Single Elimination and (2) Swiss System. Or the two stages could both be Round robin. You have lots of different possibilities, when you choose Groups Stage as the "tournament type".

If you choose Round robin as the tournament type, your tournament will not have any "groups" and will not have two stages.
