Four Turns Per Day Means....?

Post by JohnnyCyclops »

I joined my first turn-based game, a four-player one. It's listed as "four turns per day" which I thought meant I'd have to make four turns per day as would the other players, thus 16 turns per day total.

But, 36 hours into the game it rather seems to be running at four turns total per day, so one turn per player per day.

I'm ok with either (but thought it was the former). However, is there an easy guide to what the various speeds of turn-based games actually mean? Is it always described in ALL players' turns terms - so 'four turns per day' means the entire table has to complete four turns in a day?

You don't have to play four turns per day exactly. It's all about playing time. Four turns per day means you get 6 hours (24 divided by 4) of available playing time added whenever you actually do a turn.

Ok, I did see that too, and wondered how we might get through the whole game with only 24hrs each on the clock. That's useful to know I'll get 6hrs added back per turn. I guess then a game with 24 turns per day would add one hour for each turn.

That is a good guess, but the 8, 12, and 24 turns per day are special Fast Turn-based speeds. They take place in a 12 hour window that you specify such as 10AM to 10PM. Player clocks only count down inside of this window and are paused outside of the window. The amount of time that is added each turn is half as much, so a 24 turns per day game adds 30 minutes for each turn. People can still make moves outside of the window and the time still gets added as normal.

Note that the 12 hour window is fixed for everyone, so someone in a different time zone will get a different range. Unfortunately, people often join these games without knowing or caring and are often asleep during the playing time window.

yes, and they start you off with a cache of time. So, you start with 24 hours. For the one you're in, if you take you first turn within 6 hours, you'll have 24 hours at your next turn. If you take, say, 8, you'll have 22 left, but if you take the next turn within 4 hours, you'll be back up to 24 again for your next turn. And so on.

So, you could get really low in time if you waited nearly a day, but if you were Johnny on the spot for your next several turns, you'd build your cache back up.

Also, usually games with 8 or more turns per day also have night time settings where the clock turns off for a period of time, that aligns with when the person who initiated the game typically sleeps. Of course, if one of you is in Europe and the other is in the Americas, it won't necc. line up for both of you.

ETA: I guess I was wrong about how much time is added in a 24 turns/day game

Thanks for the replies. I'm a lot clearer now.

For Arena games where matching is automatic, if I click to "join game" I'm then reliant on the settings I've picked for that game as to what frequency of turns I want. The default per game under settings has it "ok/green" for 1 or 2 moves a day, tailing off to "never/red" for fast turns of 8/12/24 turns a day. I guess I can set those different per game.

It looks like if I initiate an Arena game (as a premium member I can) then I'm the one who can select the turn frequency. This is useful to know, although I've ended up in a game on a very slow 1 turn per 2 days - I think I set it to "2 turns per day" but also ticked I'm flexible, so I've been paired up with a player who likely picked a frequency two levels slower than mine.

In Arena games, everything is preset to setting determined by a panel of players who play the game a lot and have been chosen to do so. And I believe this includes turn frequency (though I could be wrong). You can join RT games or turn-based games, but the turn frequency, I believe, is set. Once you select turn-based or RT, you just click "play now" and you're matched with someone or a few people depending on what the panel has determined for the number of players in the games for arena. And, at least fir the games I play, turn-based = 1 turn per 2 days though it almost never moves that slowly.

No, turn frequency isn't set for Arena games - you can choose what you prefer by the settings (as JohnnyCyclops noted), or possibly the frequency you want if you launch from the game page with non-flexible speed settings. As people have often complained, setting speed to flexible on the game page seems to setup ANY turn-based speed that pops up, which seems not useful (as there's a big difference between 1 turn/day and 24 turns/day and worse when playing hours that you can't set/indicate preference for are taken into account).

I did wonder that when I selected "flexible" whether it was only one or two steps either side of my preference, of the whole gamut of options.
