Time zone for table restriction settings

Post by Mawik »

I play mostly turn-based games. A common problem in turn-based games is the mixing up of players from different time zones. With players from different time zones game time is unacceptable. Sometimes every user wait 1-2 days for single move in 4-5 players games.
If game is set to fast turn based, there is a lot of penalties for delay. Players break games because is not possible for play with defined time frames

Players profile has location setting so it is possible for link user to time zone and force time zone restrictions for tables.

What you think for add time zone setting to table restrictions?

If you’re playing turn based on fast, don’t you have to set a time frame for play?

Alas, country doesn't quite equate to time zone as some have multiple zones. Still, I'd go with profiles having an 8 hour sleep time setting, with default depending on the country, and you can't join a fast table if your sleep time overlaps the play time.

I think, what Mawik wants is an option to create slow turn-based tables but with playtime or time zone restrictions. So that players still have plenty of time for their moves but no one has to wait each other because of time zone differences.

Have you tried tables with 4 moves per day setting? You'll have 24 hours time reserve and you'll get 6 hours back for every move. These tables are pretty fast even with players from all over the world.

As long as they have "plenty of time", you may need to wait for them to use all that time.

Also, timezones may be useful if you can choose your own (as you can in fast turn-based games), but anything based on country will surely backfire. People select a country that's not necessarily where they are, and even in one country (assuming one country = one timezone) some people play in the morning, some in the afternoon, evening or late at night, some people log in for a few minutes every day, some people are active from breakfast to bedtime.

Yeah, I said timeframe, not time zone. If I remember correctly you have to pick a specific window of time that you can play in each day?

Yes exactly.
In last few days I created few fast turn based games, 12 moves per day, play time 8-20.
Using Fast Turn option didn't changed anything. There are games with players with 10-12h time difference.
In 1 game there are players: PL - CANADA -NL - NL. Moves 1-2 per day, so terrible latency. After 20% of game player from CANADA lost all time and can be removed.
I can break game, but there no guaranties that next created will be better. We don't finish game before weekend, so I lose all time during weekend and players will can remove me too.

How Fast Turn option works? Is it totally useless or have any algorithms for create tables?
How create fast turn based games without users from far away countries/time zones ?

You can't. All these calls to restrict by country and/or time zone are based on a bias about what is "normal," whereas a person in a different time zone may have a completely different work/school/sleep schedule from what you think is normal that allows them to play during "normal" hours in your time zone even if they are half a world away. Similarly, someone in your time zone could have a work/school/sleep schedule that is incompatible with the "normal" playing hours in your time zone. You are relying on the people joining the game to respect their commitment to play in a timely manner based on the game's playing hours.
