Edit: this is back to how it was before. Hopefully just a glitch but I'm leaving this post in case they were trialling a change that might remove this function.
We used to be able to invite someone to a game. Now it says we can only invite friends. Why? Noone is obliged to accept an invite, so what is the harm in letting people invite someone not on their friends list? I can understand not being able to invite someone who has been/given red thumbs but to limit it further than that is not helpful at all.
There are two buttons "invite a friend" and next to it or "invite another player". It used to work just fine, but now if you try to use it a stupid pop up message appears saying "it's impolite to invite people you don't know". Well I do know them, they're just not in my friends list.
People are not adding friends because a) they're new to the site and it takes too long to add them and then explain to them how to accept a friend b) because their friends list is already too long and they're fed up having "person X is online/offline" constantly appear in their game log c) because they don't want to have to add people to friends lists just to play them easily. d) because sometimes you want to invite someone but NOT make them a friend. That last one is not unusual or sinister, it's just normal behaviour.
Why can't we add players to games anymore? It's a really unneccessary block.
This change also means players can no longer "challenge" people to a game. I've had some great games of checkers and next station where someone has invited me out of the blue to play them because they had seen me play someone else.
Nor can someone invite a person who has just opened a new table to fill the last place at their currently waiting table. Something that has been quite important for Not Alone where you can wait ages to get games going. It is hard for users to browse the tables properly, particularly with the awful layout of the new game page lobbies which makes it much harder to see at a glance the other tables available and how full/empty they are. Something that is easy to do in the old "play now" lobby.
It feels like this is yet another example of BGA not understanding how people currently use the site and breaking something that was perfectly fine to make the site even more frustrating to use.
