New Player Question

I'm new to the site. I'm looking for a chance to play some of these games with my siblings, but most likely not in real time. Does the site work for this, or once we begin do we have to play the game all the way through in one session? What happens if I close my browser, is the game lost, or can we extend the game out indefinitely long, at our discretion?

We are spread out geographically and our schedules don't align very well, so having us all play at the same time is not a good option.
