Age of Discovery

Post by mobius301 »

Age of Discovery either needs to be bannable or reworked. Like Marriage of State and Renaissance, the potential of Age of Discovery to utterly destroy a strategy is beyond annoying. I understand that the card is limited by the die roll, which is why I think it should be toggleable decision to include.

Theirs a similar discord on this about dystopia. Everything is per chance. I think the probabilities in this game is a little bit more than set then actual RNG (getting ? Dice when conquering middle, or rolling science on first role) compared to real life, but, it is what it is. I don’t think they need to be banned.

Age of Discovery should not be removed. Yes, it's really annoying if your E11, T12, S11 or something alike gets skipped by a lucky roll. However, the chace your opponent gets AoD is 1/50, the chance they roll something a specific track is 1/4, and the chance you are on a spot right before one of the strong advancements is roughly 1/12. That's a 1 in roughly 1200 chance you can get busted by this. Annoying yes, but also quite preventable and very uncommon. Usually when you get messed up by the roll, that's not even the most favourable roll for your opponent.

I have a different opinion on Dystopia. Dystopia is a disgrace to skill, and should be gone sooner than later IMO. That's just a 1/50 chance to mess someone's game up. And there's no preventing it, your oppononent doesn't need to setup. It's just a lucky draw to mess up your opponent. You can say AoD is the same, but the odds are WAY smaller for it to happen, and usually the opponent gains less with a devestating AoD roll, as opposed with Dystopia.

I like Dystopia and AoD as dramatic cards that can change the momentum of games.

It is also possible to play in ways that reduce the impact of the cards. With Dictatorship, Socialism and Dark Ages and many others all far stronger and far more reliable cards.

But none of them are gamebreakingly overpowered in the way Marriage of the State can be, so they all have a place in the game.

Still, a drafting or auction mechanic for tapestry cards, and civilisations at the start would be interesting. As would being able to fully configure the tapestry and tech cards in play.
