Can I play solo, like play like both / all three factions to get the hang of the game ?

It looks like you can drop the number of players to 1 if you set it to friendly mode. I really don't think the game is clunky when you think about everything that it has going on.

You can also play in hotseat mode, where you control all players. But you need to have premium for that.

You definitely can. Drop the number of players to one and then play away! I'd recommend starting with the Poland scenario first to understand movement and combat, but you can also solo the Main Event scenario to get the full picture.

Please forget hotseat, I made this game playable solo.
Hotseat is also useless in multiplayer because USE has no hidden data

When I set it for the Poland Campaign it appears that it won't let me play past first move.

When I play the Battle of France it announces 'Defeated', but doesn't confirm who has been defeated. Am I correct in thinking France is defeated because I've taken Paris and Calais and the French have abandoned the Maginot line to try and create a stable line. Or has Germany failed to get France to capitulate in the time allowed ?

If the interface at the end just said 'France defeated' or 'German aims thwarted' it would be clearer.

That scenario is only one turn, specifically only the German portion of the turn. That's all the time Germany has to conquer Poland.

It most likely says in the game log.

Germany only has a certain number of turns to conquer France, and conquer means to drop them to 0 national will.

Have got to the invasions of Denmark and Norway, but I can't seem to replicate what I in the training scenario.
Can select unit, select transport, select sea zone, select escort, but can't select Oslo as a target . . .

You have to place a Surprise Attack marker in the sea zone to do an amphibious invasion.
