Play Speed Etiquette?

Hey all! I'm newish to the site and up until now, I've only really played with IRL friends or solo games. I've read a few different threads about play speed. I joined some 1/day games and usually get my 1 play in during after work. I like that since I'm learning and like to take as long as I need to read/think/go over the rules/etc.

Over the weekend, while I'm just hanging out on the computer and can play my turn after I get the notification. I usually just go whenever I see that I have a table waiting. Is this a bad thing? Since people are expecting to check their games 1/day I don't want to make people feel like they have to go faster. I'm OK with waiting until tomorrow because that is what I signed up for after all. I just happened to be at the computer, lol.

Sorry for the weird question. It just seems like there are a lot of different thoughts on play speed.

Play whenever you want, as long as it is within the allotted time. In my opinion, the only possible issue with playing "too fast", occurs in 4-moves-per-day speed with 4 or more players. That's not fast enough to have playing hours, but with the wrong combination of time zones and schedules may cause your time to always decrease unless you sleep less than 8 hours per day. In such a case, if you see that the player that comes after you is in a far away time zone, it may be polite to not make your move immediately when it's your turn and wait at least a couple of hours. But this is a corner case and a situation I just thought of, in general just play when you want.

On the other hand, if you wait on purpose to the last minute to play your every turn... some people may not take it nicely. But as long as you don't go into negative time, you'd be doing nothing wrong.

I agree with Jellby on this. There's no such thing as "playing too fast." You never hear it*. Play when you're available, and within the time allotted for your turn, and you'll be fine.


* at least, not here - it'll come up rarely in live, person-to-person games, if people are moving too fast for people to keep up with what just happened. For example, a Magic: The Gathering tournament where someone is playing too fast to be sure that they're not using mana that they don't actually have...

That's what the time bank is for. If someone joins a 1 turn/day table and they intend to only log in once a day to make their move, as long as they consistently log in once a day to make their move there is no way you could make them run out of time even if you always take your turn immediately after they do.
