Can't support AI art

Post by confoundedjoe »

Not only are they cheaping out by not hiring actual artist, the art looks really bland. All oversaturated and blurry with no character and inconsistent style. The gameplay seems fun but there are plenty of games that are fun that are made by humans.

I don't like Ark Nova's choice of Google-style images. Yet iis one of the best games i ever played. Would have preferred an artist to draw illustrations, but probably would have made the game waaayy too expensive. I understand the editorial choice, and someone still had to work on taking and selecting the right pictures.

I don't see Path of Civilisation so differently. It's already an expensive game. So an editor needs to consider options to simplify and reduce cost in various aspect. AI was considered as a solution. It a powerful tool, and someone still had to work hard to guide the design choices and make necessary adjustments. Result clearly isn't as good as the work of an artist, but that won't stop me from trying the game. Maybe I'll discover I like it. All the work and resources that have been put in other aspects of the game may be worth it.

The trouble is that we are talking about stolen assets here. Yes, it does certainly take a village to make a game, and someone had to make sure the AI was doing it's job, but we still have a lot of stolen assets here. AI art isn't just created whole cloth. A lot of artists' work have been stolen for this. They didn't get AN artist to do their work...they got hundreds of artists and stole their work.

"The elements of this game are not the result of a simple request to an Artificial Intelligence. Instead, they are the product of an artistic direction process that includes compositing, editing, and careful retouching by real humans with real bits of neurons..."

Let's try this again. Yes...real people did some work to smooth out edges. But, the fact remains that the CORE art pieces are stolen. Brushing them up doesn't make it any better. Real people took stolen art and touched it up. They may be real humans, but the foundation is stolen.

Captain Games have been crystal clear about the way art design has been made and the game has been released last year...

What is your point with minimizing the job done ("smooth out edges", "brushing up" ) and writing 3 times "stolen" nearly one year later ?

Find another crusade.

Don't be naive, human artists also "steal" other people's creations. And I don't mean plagiarism. Do you think an artist drawing a picture of the Eiffel Tower has never seen it live, or in photo, or video, or read a description of it (not to mention that the tower itself is a creation)?

10 yards on the play. False equivalency.

Yeah, I'm really disappointed to see this on BGA and them supporting the use AI produced images.

All they're saying is that a person utilized the image generator and touched them up with photoshop. Like, the most basic and minimal amount of work when it comes to using the tools. They're just dressing it up like it's actually comparable, while skirting the issue that the tools were built upon the back of stolen labor without acknowledgment.
